I will give it a go in the next few days. I will use a Savage mark 2 and a 17 HMR just because that is my current caliber of fascination.

Good thing yer just shootin at paper, cause on my steel "rimfire" range you just got moved back to 100 yards to avoid damage to my steel. 17hmr & 22wmr bends the hanging arm, and dimples the steel up close.

The good news is that I have a 9 target 1"-5" in 1/2" step .22 KYL rack for 100 yards and beyond.
I really enjoy these ridged swinger/spinner style multiple decreasing in size target racks!

The ridged swinger/spinner just doesn't hold up very well to too much impact without a heavy "arm" which takes away from the target itself.

17 hmr dimples mild steel pretty good even at 100. On my range I have a whole bunch of mild steel plates at 10-30 yards and then from 50 to 200 they are all AR-500

I would love to have one of those tiny KYL racks for .22 LR.
Me too but I need to buy an accurate 22 first. This levergun is fun but not gonna cut it

But ~3yrs ago, the mothership passed a new rule in which stage designs could not include penalties which caused shooters to lose points which had been earned.
Not coincidentally about the time I stopped shooting PRS. Dictating stupid rules that take the fun out of the game. Funny how everyone I talk to thinks matches used to be more fun.

Not to derail, or maybe it isn’t, since this is a KYL challenge... What I personally saw happening at matches was one of 4 things: 1) on calm days, top level shooters would all clean the rack, or work their way back up to a 4 (hit 4, miss one, hit 4, hold one to avoid dropping again), 2) on rough days, top shooters would all drop out at the dirty target and leave the last one or two clean targets alone, 3) top shooters would yell to bottom shooters to stop when either they knew they would miss the next shot or not have enough rounds left to work back up to that score, and 4) bottom shooters would mess up and end up with a zero on the stage. So it really only hurt the bottom end guys to have the “lose your points” penalty for missing - or it made everybody get the same 3 or 4 points on what otherwise really could be a separator stage.

So KYL stages turned into TYL stages where we’d hit to advance, but couldn’t lose any points. You weren’t forcing anyone to engage smaller targets if they had missed the largest targets, but then it was still basically a 3 point or 5 point stage... most of them now seem to be 2 shots each large to small or 5 targets large to small twice. So the worst shooter might not hit any, the next few guys hit the 2 shots on the biggest target, maybe a couple others, the top shooter cleans it, or maybe drops one... now there’s 7-8 points spread in the field, instead of 2-3.

In 2019, my KYL strategy was to get my 3 or 4, and walk away. I wouldn’t even risk the 5th target, because the best I could do after hitting the 4th plate was +1, whereas on the second pass, if I messed up and missed any target, I’d get a zero, so I’d even stop at 3 if I had hit the 4th plate on the first pass. Ending up -1 from what I had if I had simply passed on the 5th shot and taken my 4.

next time i bust out my a22 i will give this challenge a try. I've posted its accuracy here before i believe but id love to test my skill with the challenge.

Im up to it, when I get a chance.
I bounce between a Romanian 69 and a Ruger 10/22
I love to shoot 100 yard 2" and bigger spinners with the .22lr, and my 4 year old grand son is as almost good as I am. He yas a Marlin youth i fit to him. I posted a vid, once a couple years back of him shooting.
In Winter and summer, I measure off steel plates at every camp, and keep "in tune"
Im in the village awaiting Caribou, but Trapping in November will be soon enough,

I didn’t take the 22 because it was too windy to bother but I did get out my 17 HMR.
Sorry, but the challenge is for 22LR as clearly indicated on the thread title and on the target so your submission is disqualified. (17 HMR is much flatter shooting than 22LR) I think the cute dog even agrees. :p
“Real World” 22LR 50 Yard Challenge

So far, our current score for the challenge: (If we have a tie for same size ring, we will use whoever is closer to center as winner)
  1. maxxhavoc: 0.75" - Tikka T1x, Leupold Rifleman 3-9x, 88 degrees, 80% humidity, Aguila Super Extra SV, Caldwell Front and rear bags

I guess picking the wrong parents is continuing to pay off (Ah, the joy of spinal stenosis, etc.) and as I wait for my cataract surgery in both eyes starting next week (Thankfully surgery will help with Glaucoma and maybe optic nerve end damage), I thought about starting another myth busting thread while I undergo surgeries and recovery for the next several weeks.

Found this video where 22LR shooters start with 2" metal swing target and proceed down to 1/4". Shooting stops when smallest target is missed and scored with largest target hit.

I duplicated the same challenge onto a copy paper pdf. This is "myth busting" challenge as members are expected to take cold rifle/barrel and commence shooting without warm up to see what the "real world" accuracy is. If you need to zero the scope, you can do it with the 2" circle.

Challenge rules:
  • Expect members observe the honor rule in actually "measuring" out to 50 yards (No pacing).
  • Without warm up, shoot one shot per circle.
  • If you cannot see the circles, fill in the circles you can't see.
  • If bullet hole touches line, continue to smaller target (As steel plate would have moved).
  • If hole is outside of line, stop shooting and submit target with information added to the table by taking a picture of completed target.
  • Additional submissions can be done using different ammunition.
  • NOTE: If you KNOW your rifle is capable of shooting sub 1" at 50 yards, I have no issues if you want to start out at 1". I think starting out with 2" circle would benefit those members with "non-match grade" rifles.
My hope is members "myth bust" or "confirm" actual accuracy of their 22LR rifles and ammunition.

Here's the target pdf for the challenge - https://www.thehighroad.org/index.p...9/&temp_hash=1dd6363a6811f17cac47cc85e39e57e0

Dont know how i missed this one, ill add some targets to the list for the next range trip.

Might shoot the .22s at 50 and the .17 at 100(ish) depending on time/conditions.

Its 100% cheating

Will bookmark for next .22 LR range day because it sounds like fun. But need to exercise some of my milsurps first that are in the gun closet screaming "me!!" "me!!" "no, me!!" Poor little ole rifles -- don't like being ignored, ya know. :D

What makes this challenge "real world" and "myth busting" is (At least I think), instead of posting occasional smallest 5 shot groups that discount larger groups , you are increasingly narrowing your focus to shoot smaller "spread extreme" of group size you KNOW your rifle/ammunition is capable of.

It's a version of "Can you prove it? Right now?" (Of course, to ourselves as holes on target). :)

I like doing tests like this because it makes you focus a lot more on the wind drift than if you were shooting groups. When I’m shootings for groups I hold dead center and let the chips fall where they may, but doing a test like this I’m using the first few shots to try to get a handle on the wind and the last 2 or 3 shots are a pop quiz on what you learned.

We all have good and bad range days.

Give it another try on a calmer day.

Will do. Hoping for a better day this Saturday or Sunday. BTW, using a target setup 10/22 for the challenge, using CCI Standard Velocity. But also might try it with my TCR22 with CCI Velocitors. :D

Shot this today. Indoor range, Prone off a mat with a small bag and bipod ... #1 was shot from a cold bore. #2 was better.
Since the challenge was meant for cold barrel, I will score the first target.

Current score for the challenge: (If we have a tie for same size ring, we will use whoever is closer to center as winner)
  1. earplug: 0.50" - Kidd classic 16.5"/Victor Titan/Kidd 2 stage 8 oz, Athlon BTR 4.5-27x50mm, SK Long Range, Magpul bipod/rear bag/prone
  2. maxxhavoc: 0.75" - Tikka T1x, Leupold Rifleman 3-9x, 88 degrees, 80% humidity, Aguila Super Extra SV, Caldwell Front and rear bags

I bought a Crimson Trace scope 50% off a few months ago, and mounted it on my very new to me Vudoo (Spent a bonus I don't normally get on it). Now all I need is to sight it in and try the ammo I have in it.

I have four types of "match" .22 LR ammo. Lapua Center X, SK Rifle Match, SK Long Range Match, and SK High Velocity Match to try in it and the Bergara.

I tried to get one of those scopes but waited one day too long. How do you like it?

Glass is real nice, clicks could be more positive/crisper, but not bad. Reticle is short, doesn't fill the window until the
power gets up there. It will be interesting when I shoot it side by side with the Vortex Viper PST Gen II on the Bergara.

The 3 Series Crimson Trace 5-25X56
Bergara B-14 .22 LRb.JPG

And I did shoot them together at the range today testing some ammo. No compliants. Shot at 50 and 100 yards.

printed a few of these targets to mess with shooting tomorrow. honestly, I don't think I can consistently hit a 2" circle at 50 yards, so - a bit above my skill level, but you don't get better if you're not competing against people better than you.
