One poblem, the 30-40 uses .308 bullets, the 7.62x54 uses .310. The conversion is probably possible if you think it's worth the expense and if you can find a smith with the right equipment. Wouln't be surprised if this was done in the 1920s and 30s.

While we're on the subject, what about converting to the 7.62x39?

I think the biggest problem to these conversions would be the bolt face being designed for the 7.62 Russian rimmed cartridge.
I just checked a .308 catridge against the bolt face on my M44 and it doesn't look like it would work. You would get very minimal if any extractor engagement.

If you were to just try to rechamber it I'd think you'd need to set the barrel back first and then you would run into the bullet diameter problem mentioned by RON IN PA.
It really isn't practical at all.
Something I've thought of is taking one that is rusted out and having it rebored to a wildcat, something like a 9x54R. But even that would probably cost upwards of $200 so you really have to want to do it.

As above, concerns with the bolt. Barrel might be a little smaller(wouldn't know, not a gun smith but possible) thus perhaps some play unless stock changed.
Even assuming the last part is not true it would probably require a new bolt, receiver(to fit bolt, perhaps) and barrel. If ya have the money I don't see a reason why you couldn't. Don't see a reason why though.

I mentioned .30-40 and not some other caliber (like 7.62X39 or .308 for example) because it is a rimmed case. If you look at a 7.62X54 while holding it next to a .30-40 Krag case, they look very similar...
This all started when my friend, who has both a Nagant and a Krag rifle, borrowed my brass tumber and put both cases in at the same time. We had a hard time sorting them when they were done tumbling because they look so much alike. That got me to thinking "hey dosen't anyone make a Nagant barrel in .30-40?" and then I posed the question to you guys. I don't have any plans to try this, I just thought it would be cool to do and was wondering if it were possible in case I wanted to try it latter...
Anyway, I think you could probably use the same bolt. My guess is that the only mod you'd need is a new barrel, but I'm not too sure about that. Any gunsmiths out there that have any thoughts on this?

Nagant in .30-40 sounds interesting, but I wonder if you could convert one w/ a shot-out barrel into .45-70 or .410 gauge like Gibbs does w/ the SMLE's?
And, if possible, a M-N in 7.62x39 would be the berries. And I know they convert SMLE's to that caliber.

The Finns (Valmet) did some experimental conversion of M91's and M39's to 7.62x39. They were called the M91/56 and the M39/56, respectively (since the experiments were done in 1956). According to Doug Bowser, "the conversion required the replacement of the bolt head, shortening of the magazine box from the rear, lengthening of the bolt stop and rebarreling of the rifle." Sounds like it would be pretty expensive to replicate.
