Flew into Honduras and noticed some soldiers mulling around. Waited until they turned away and snapped a picture of the gun they were carrying. At 50 yards, I couldn't identify it. Yeah, the picture sucks and the whole gun isn't showing, but somebody out there has got to have an idea. Hope somebody can help me out:

I believe either Honduras or Guatemala use Galils, possibly in 7.62 NATO. Tough to tell from the pic, but that barrel has a vague Galil-ish look to it.
 
I did a Deployment for Training with a Honduran unit in 1990. They had the most worn M16A1s I've ever seen back then.

Looks like a Daewoo. Cheaper than Galil, lets them use M16 magazines.
 
Honduras was one of Israel's first arms customers starting in 1975. Among the small arms purchased were Galil's and Uzi's, so my guess would be a Galil.

I was 16 when I left Honduras, but from what I remember, I mostly saw M-16s, but there were a significant portion of this other mystery rifle, which at the time I just called Galils, but I'm not sure that was correct now. They were definatly not Daewoos, they had the Galil style forend, and skeleton stocks. Looking at the first picture though, the forend does look more like the Daewoo one, I just don't ever remember seeing any Daewoos while I was there.

I also remember seeing a good number of FALs, and the occasional AK.

off topic:
Does anyone know what the current gun control condition is there? I remember having civilian friends who's parents owned AKs and my Church's night watchman alternated between carrying an Uzi and an AK, but around the time I was leaving Pineda Ponce was running for president and he was making a big deal about how if he were elected he would do away with guns.

Edit to add: After reading Selector67's post, I guess I was right about them being Galils.

I am almost certain that is a Galil. I magnified the image and it is obvious the gun is canted, with the bottom of fore-end facing the camera. The bottom of the fore-end is in shadow, and that makes it look smaller and more rounded.

Attached is a version where I have isolated the rifle, and you can see the fore-end better.

Back from a weekend trip. What's in the truck? I know, but I can't tell you. :)

Looked through every gun I could find on the net, remtek, Max Popenker's site, etc. The closest one I could find was the Galil, but I have to say that it looks like a round handguard. I also thought it might be a DS Arms free-float handguard on a Galil, but that was just a thought. It's not the DS Arms. Still not sure it's a Galil, though, as the Galil handguard is closer to the gas block. Since it doesn't fit the Galil pattern, I'm still going to wonder.
