I was looking at various Barretts on Gunbroker and noticed in reading the description that the seller had put in the description " get one now before the national ban is put into effect". So, if any of you are in the know, is there a national ban even in the works, or is he just trying to get somebody to buy the gun on a whim?

Here's the auction

That's a really sad and disgusting sales pitch.

There's no national .50BMG pending or on the horizon. They passed one in Kalifornistan, and would like to try someday nationally...This dude is just trying to sell a .50bmg using political scare tactics.

I can't stand that sort of opportunistic mentality by dealers. It reminds me of the way domestic firearm manufacturers approve of foreign weapon import bans. We might never, ever see a repeal of the 1989 ban or the "sporting purposes" clause because our own gun industry will never back it. They will never permit the gun lobby to make an attempt.

There are people who've actually expressed sadness for the expiration of the AWB because it devalued their pre-ban rifles that they could have sold for many thousands of dollars.

People who think and act this way are saboteurs of our cause.

Same type of thinking. :barf: :barf: :barf:

There are a few states that are follow in the footsteps of California by trying to pass .50BMG bans. For example, every year in Mass a bill comes up in the State senate from a anti-gun Democrat legislator, that would ban .50 BMG, Five & Seven pistol and some other calibers. Luckily it has never gotten out of commitee or has been dropped from consideration do to the lack of support of the state controlling Democrat party. And yes the Dems are the ones that are not interested in passing the bill. Repubs don't have any political power in the state.

I'm hoping it's just fear-mongering. I'm wanting to eventually get one, I'd hate for it to be banned before I can get one :/

It's 100% fear-mongering and a manipulative way to sell a rifle. Yes a few states already have bans and a few more have bans in the works. Face it, if you live in MA or NJ or whatever, they're going to keep on trying to ban whatever they possibly can, and you should be aware of that already. There is no 50 BMG on the horizon at the Federal level. If the Dems take back Congress in November, that MIGHT change, but for now, that's over the horizon. Even the Dems must remember at this point that they lost Congress in 1994 in large part due to the AWB so if they get back in they might be a little bit smarter.

(I personally will not vote for any national-level Dems until they really show me that they have given up on gun control, and that's not going to happen for a long time.)

Miami Vice/.50BMG scene...

I think all the people who saw the big .50cal sniper rifle scene in the new film; Miami Vice got all bent out of shape, .

My good friend saw Miami Vice and told me a woman in the crowd got upset over how powerful those weapons can be. My friend said; "What do think a .50 would do?".

I've heard the big reason many politicos(including CA's Arnold Schwartznegger) want to ban the big .50s are that they can shoot down some aircraft. It's a valid concern but I don't think it's worth a ban on everyone owning these powerful rifles.

PS: I've also seen that Barret refuses to sell any .50cal weapons to CA law enforcement until this ban is removed, ;) .

Man, you have a short horizon.

"My porch is on fire, but it hasn't spread to the house yet. Any danger to my house is over the horizon."

Prediction: If the Dems take over two of three (White House, Senate, House), there will be a very serious attempt at a new AWB. AWBII will be much more restrictive, and it will certainly include .50 cal. There will be no sunset clause and no provision for people who already own these firearms.

The whole 'assault weapons' philosophy is to carve out a kind of firearm that can be banned without raising too much backlash from gun owners. Evil Black Rifles and .50 cals are a very good choice in terms of political tactics. I know many gun owners who agree with these bans. My former gun club banned .50 cal thinking that they might attract bad press. I have heard guys sitting around at the skeet club and in hunting cabins voicing support for bans on EBR.

None of which is to deny the person selling the .50 was certainly using the political climate as a marketing ploy.

There is no push for a ban per se but there is a push (mostly by Senators Feinstein and Boxer of CA) to put 50 caliber CENTERFIRE rifles (not handguns) under the NFA.

Deukmejian was a jerk, he signed the AWB in California. My business was in David Roberti's district and he was all over town bragging that the Deuk was gonna sign it if it passed. :barf:

The national ban is a load of crap, currently, but I could certainly see how .50 BMG weapons make an easy target for legislation. They're expensive and not that many people have them, so not that many people are liable to complain or fight the idea. We all know how the old holocaust saying goes. That and they pack serious power the likes of which probably scares most people.

For the people who believe that firearms in general have no place in private hands, its one of the easier wins they can go after.

It is a sad, and all too common, human characteristic to allow greed to overcome honor. In times past, this negative trait was suppressed by the vast majority of people--in modern times, it is encouraged by those lacking morality, and because immoral behavior requires less effort and yields greater immediate gratification than moral behavior, it spreads like wildfire. This is the root of the real problem: 80 million gun owners, 95% of whom could not care less about the steady loss of their Constitutionally-guaranteed right to keep and bear arms.

Greed is the most destructive trait. Expose it and fight it wherever it may be found!

Serious power? Seriously? I beg to differ. I would say no hand-held firearm (by definition a small arm) packs anything remotely like serious power. Serious power is the sort of thing that must be mounted on vehicles, fired from cannon, or dropped from the sky.

Rusty, I've heard the same thing from Arnie's own two lips. I sent him a letter written in German (I speak several dialects fluently, my Grandparents are from Osterreich) and received a letter in return, stating that his personal belief is that firearms in general have no place in private hands.

Would you please scan the letter and make it available? Is it in English or German?

Thanks.

Well, the M2 generally always was vehicle-mounted, or had some kind of serious fixed mount, even if that's not exactly the firearm we are talking about.

Seller's response:

well bush is out of office in 2008 and you can count on the AWB comming back
with avengance once the Democrats take office. hillary clinton is going to
run for president and as you know hubby bill put the AWB into effect just
imagine what she will do. you will be lucky if bb guns will still be legal.

Medula Oblongata: Please scan the letter.

And while you long for another Ronald Regan you are forgetting that he signed some anti gun bills in 1986.

Being a Republican does not mean they are on our side.

I agree with antsi, above. In 1992, who whould have predicted that only 2 years into his first term (with a Dem controlled Congress) we would see the AWB? Other than the sunstting ofthe AWB and the manufacturers' protection, the grabber haven't lost any ground since then. Give them the chance and they will take their next step (a bigger one) forward.

Also, RINO gun grabbers do not count as "non-liberals." Altough you can find Dems who are not gun grabbers (and even 2A supporters), you cannot find any leftists who are not grabbers. Likewise, you can't find many actual conservatives (remember, RINOs don't count) who are.

It may be a sales pitch but it's a legit one

It frequently come up in the anti arguments. Google it if you don't believe it. It doesn't have to be a national ban, if you live in a state where it is banned then you can't have it. If most or all states "ban" it, as they have in CA, then it is a ban, plain and simple.
