It's 100% fear-mongering and a manipulative way to sell a rifle. Yes a few states already have bans and a few more have bans in the works. Face it, if you live in MA or NJ or whatever, they're going to keep on trying to ban whatever they possibly can, and you should be aware of that already. There is no 50 BMG on the horizon at the Federal level. If the Dems take back Congress in November, that MIGHT change, but for now, that's over the horizon.

Man, you have a short horizon.
"My porch is on fire, but it hasn't spread to the house yet. Any danger to my house is over the horizon."
Prediction: If the Dems take over two of three (White House, Senate, House), there will be a very serious attempt at a new AWB. AWBII will be much more restrictive, and it will certainly include .50 cal. There will be no sunset clause and no provision for people who already own these firearms.
The whole 'assault weapons' philosophy is to carve out a kind of firearm that can be banned without raising too much backlash from gun owners. Evil Black Rifles and .50 cals are a very good choice in terms of political tactics. I know many gun owners who agree with these bans. My former gun club banned .50 cal thinking that they might attract bad press. I have heard guys sitting around at the skeet club and in hunting cabins voicing support for bans on EBR.
None of which is to deny the person selling the .50 was certainly using the political climate as a marketing ploy.
