Getting ready to load 6mm Creedmoor for a Ruger Precision rifle. I want to neck size after the first firing of the brass. I have never use the Hornady match grade dies that use the brushing to set the neck tension. It says it is a full length sizing die. Can I back it off and just use it for neck sizing only? Are these dies worth the hassle of having to deal with the bushings? I have only used the lee neck sizing dies, they are simple and straight forward to use. I just don't see that lee is making 6mm Creedmoor dies.

No? Maybe, if no contacf is made with the case body, when sizing. Depends on the size of the rifles chamber. A small , tight chamber being best.

Use the fl bushing die and just bump the shoulder back a few thousands. The neck bushing should size about 1/2 of the neck.

The bushing dies are no hassle. Brass will last longer, no neck splits. After the unsized part of the neck expands to the chamber, accuracy will improve. Takes about 3 firing.

This has been my experience with Redding fl bushing type S die in 243 Win..

Redding has said - If fired case necks have to be sized down more then .008" to .010" , it may cause runout? I dont check runout.. On target is what counts.

So would you have a bushing size that you suggest I get to start out with for 6mm?

The Bushing size needed, would depend on the brand of brass. If necking down 6.5 creedmoor, neck wall thickness may be on the thicker side?

Measure a loaded round, bushing should be .002" smaller. Or You need to ask someone loading 6mm.

My 243 win may be different? I use 268, 269, 270" bushings. More than 1 bushing is needed, i have 3 that covers neck turned brass and Win and Rem factory brass.

Thanks for all the good info. I am trying to figure out how I want to start out with loading for it. I may just get a regular fl die for now and step up to this after I have loaded for it some. That will help me know what bushings I will need after I turn the necks.

Finding bushing size, when no die is available .

- New factory brass may come sized for reloading and already chamber in your rifle.

Make a dummy round by seating a bullet using some type of home made seater. Hard wood with a smaller hole. Note that it will take 35 to 100 pounds to seat some bullets. Use a boatail bullet.

Measure dummy rounds neck diameter. Order a bushing 2 or 3 thousandth smaller.

I load Win & Rem 243 win brass as it comes from Midwayusa in 100 lot bags.

I went down that road of bushing dies playing with neck tension . Also tried neck sizing only for accuracy , I only benchrest and I found the standard full length dies used with the Redding Competition shellholder set of 5 the best way to accurately size the case with what ever case headspace detentions you want from zero to .004 . Runout is mush better then anything you can get with the bushing dies . 6.5 CM is a great round don't drive yourself crazy , full size to minimum headspace and find the right powder charge and bullet seating depth . Once you get that tight group with 3 ten shot groups , practice on form and you will be a happy shooter. Not tweaking everything possible to group even tighter . Believe me , I went down that road . I found the round that works , I haven't changed anything , stuck with it this season and my groups are getting tighter just working on form . Good Luck with your 6.5 CM it's a great shooter .
