I really need a AR-15 type of rifle. After missing a coyote on friday at 216 yards with my Thompson Center Contender carbine in .223, I need a good varmint rifle. The question is, what is a good AR type with varmint accuracy that won't break the bank? Does any suck animal exist (I' won't be shooting prarie dogs)?

You can probably get a nice Bushmaster for around $1,000 that will give you some good out of the box accuracy. If you are eligible for the DCM (Civilian Markmanship Program) you can get a really good one through your DCM-affiliated club, about $875 I think. OR you can get a good bolt action .223 for about half that amount. Many choices.

Or you can build one for minute of varmint for about $400. How far are your shots, this will help tell us more.

My RRA has produced several 2" groups at 200 yards with a better shooter than me shooting it. I paid $700 for it with a Leupold mount and Weaver rings in about 99.9% condition. For some reason, I shoot quite a bit better with a bolt rifle. Maybe with a flat top and higher rings. The handle mounted scope just doesn't seem to be the right choice for me.

Given where I shoot, the maximum range on coyotes would be maybe 275 yards. I kind of like the idea of a flat top to get the scope down low with a good bull barrel. I guess my budget number for a rifle without glass would be about $1,000.

For that number, I would think a Varmit setup from either Bushmaster or RRA would meet your needs. Personally, I would look in the classfieds over at www.ar15.com and find a good used one already set up and ready to go. Probably will save yourself several hundred dollars.

I just bought a RRA lower receiver for $95, and I'm going to order a parts kit ($60), Hogue grip & A2 Buttstock ($70).

You can get a RRA varmenter upper for $474

Thats $699

And the beauty is, you can go ahead and get a carbine or A2 upper for another $400, and be well equipped for CQB

Thats what i love about the AR! The only problem is deciding on which upper to get first :neener:
