I bought a 40S&W PX4, but ended up trading it in a deal. Since I already own 3 Berettas, I'd like to expand my horizons a bit....The problem is, I still have about 1000 rounds of 40 S&W ammo.

What gun do u recommend? I'd really like a Sig 226, but it comes with a rather large price tag. I'd like to spend $600 tops.

Springfield XD .40, CZ 75 Compact in .40, or the newer P01, FNH makes a nice .40 too. Of course there are several Glocks also.
I shot an XD in 9mm this past weekend and was very impressed, definatly worth looking into.

Jblaze, welcome aboard. Looking forward to the Ghost Rider flick? I'm a long time Glock owner and big fan of them. However, I just shoot a M1911-pattern pistol a lot better. Why not check out a steel pistol, just to see what the "other side" is all about? Not wanting to start a flame war here. I own both and would not give up either.

There's certainly nothing wrong with a Sig.

1000 rounds of any ammo can be converted to another caliber. You certainly don't have to eat it all if you don't have a .40 anymore. I would try to trade it for a few accessories for whatever gun I bought.

I carried a Glock 22 for years, and I never had a problem with it, I also just found that a 1911 fits me better. If I REALLY wanted to, I could keep the polymer frame and get a Kimber BP-ten. (A 1911 with a high-capacity polymer frame.)

There are several 1911s in .40 out there.

If you want the SIG get the SIG. I picked up a CPO SIG 226 in 9mm. The CPO SIGs are used guns that SIG inspects, they may change out parts as needed, and then sell as Certified Pre Owned (CPO) SIGs with a 1 year warranty. They are SIGnificantly :)neener: ) less than the new SIGs. I love mine. Enough that I bought a used (non-CPO) SIG 229 in .40S&W shortly thereafter.

If you want to stay with new guns, the FN FNP and the S&W M&P look very interesting. I'm also a big fan of Taurus, their autos are really good guns, take a look at the Taurus PT940 and I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.

I've shot a few pistols in 40 cal. and of all of them, the nicest was the Beretta 96 YMMV :D But if I were to do it again or if your're asking, I'm recommending the Beretta even tho it's a bit redundant :D

JBlaze, welcome to THR. There are a ton of guns in 40 S&W in your price range. Almost any of them would be a good pistol to add to your collection. The best one is the one that fits you best; I'm sure the local gun shop(s) will be happy to let you handle a bunch and see what fits your hand. Or, as was already suggested, trade the ammo toward accesories or round s of a different caliber if you don't want to keep 40 S&W in the rotation.

My new

Walther P99 in .40 did not dissappoint when I shot it for the first time last weekend.

I have an XD-40 & a BHP in 40 S&W. I really like them both but they are two different animals. The BHP is sexier, prettier, nicer in the hand and nicer in about every other way. The XD is a no nonsense gun though, a "get the job done" gun. If someone walks into my home and those two guns are the two available, I am grabbing my XD-40. For one, it has night sights on it. Secondly, I don't even have to think about flicking off a safety, just shoot. (Not that thinking about a safety is a problem, the XD is just a no brainer)

It really depends what you want out of it. There are a whole lot of nice semi-auto's in 40 S&W. The Browning Pro 40 and FNP 40 would be another I would look into.

Good luck. :)

If you just want an accurate range/plinker gun, check out the EAA Witness Elite Match. My 40 was $429 out the door,it's by far the most accurate gun I own,and I have HK,Sig,Glock,Springfield XD,and others in my harem...It's a fairly large gun, though,so you won't want to be carrying it concealed...:D

I've got to recomend the SA XD .40. Great guns...tough as nails...super accurate. If it fits your hand, buy it. You won't regret it, and if you do...you can just send it to me.:D

This will be a range-only gun. A smooth trigger and light recoil is a definite plus.

As a side note, Beretta has spoiled me into liking aesthetically pleasing guns. While this is nowhere near as important to me as the actual FEEL on the gun, it does have some influence in my decision.

For a range only pistol go with the 24/7 you wont be disappointed ;)

Save your extra hard earned cash and take some nice pretty lady out to a nice fancy dinner and a movie :D

I'm reading about each of the recommended guns one by one before I make my decision.

Currently I'm reading about the Springfield XD......which size barrel do you guys recommend? As I mentioned before, this will be for range only so a compact gun isn't very important. Also, what are the major differences between the XD and the XD Tactical....the price is practically the same for the two.
