I took my synthetic stocked Remington 700 in .30-06 out to range this weekend to sight in the 3-9X - 36mm Redfield scope. After getting it on the paper at 100yds I could not get any consistancy. The shots were up to 4 inches apart and I know I didn't jerk or move the rifle to cause this. I took the scope off and went again today to check it with the basic iron sights and had much better consistency at the same range, even with a semi-sore shoulder. The groups were around 2 inches even with the horrendous Remington ramped rear and white bead front sight.
I hate to think that my tried and trusted Redfield scope of about 10 years has finally crapped out on me, but I'm thinking it did. Can they be repaired or am I relagated to buy a new scope? I have been researching scopes and think that the best option for my uses would be a fixed 6 power from either Burriss (Fullfield II), Leupold (FX-III) or Nikon (Monarch UCC). I feel that a fixed power scope would be more reliable with less to go wrong without the zoom and less to muss with in the field. I'd appreciate any opinions.

Before you toss your Redfield, I'd suggest that you inspect your mounting system first. Make sure everything is tight and threadlocked.

Oh yes, I inspected the mounting closely and it was rock solid, the rings are tight and the one-piece mount was tight. This is why I'm really thinking something is wrong internally with the scope.

your scope can be repaired - the folks at weaver are handling it.

if you want a fixed-power scope, i have always felt the fixed-6 was the most useful. as to which scope brand, i am a huge leupold fan and would, of course, go leupold.

first things first - check on your scope and how much it will cost, and go from there. good luck.
