I'm a gunsmithing student and one of my projects is to make a custom 700. I've ordered and received my Stainless steel action and a custom SS barrel, now I need bottom metal.

I'd prefer a hinged floor-plate. I've looked at the custom SS bottom metals, and they are very pricey. I'm sure they are of excellent quality, and I'd love to use only the best components, but I am a po' college student.

So!
Can anyone recommend a source of SS bottom metal that is affordable? Even if its used parts?

Is the shiny aluminum remington bottom metal that brownells sells of good fit/finish and does it match the appearance of a SS action/barrel.

Appeance and attention to detail is important, because this rifle will be part of my portfolio and I want it to be something I will treasure and be proud of

Look into pacific tool and gauge. BTW what gunsmithing school are you going through? I am interested in doing this myself but will have to do it online. Another option would be to consider making your own bottom metal but that's a bit tedious. Gunbroker might have some parts.

Montgomery community college in troy NC. I doubt an online course would be sufficient, we spent a whole semester in the machine shop just learning basic/advanced machining. Plus the advice and perspective of our experienced teachers is INVALUABLE.

I won't have time to make my own. I have to fit and chamber barrels on to atleast 3 actions, plus make a 2 piece stock. Plus we're spending a week at SHOT show. Its going ti be a BUSY semester.

Fair enough I'm glad I'm done with my school for the time being. I graduated last may with a B.S. in Animal Business. I was in college for six years and even sprinkled in a few summer courses, all while working on the family ranch and raising a child who is now about to be 4 with my fiance. I'm training to be an crop insurance adjuster for the time being. I know all about a full schedule did I mention planning a wedding?

JG, if you dont mind using stock remington parts, take a look at Ebay. Ive found Bdl lower metal for some of my projects, and there is almost always DM bits on there.
