I currently own a Springfield loaded 1911 and I love how it shoots. Now I'm feeling the itch for another handgun. I want something in 9mm I had a Hk Usp and didn't really care for it and the XD doesn't really shoot like my 1911. Any ideas of something I should be looking at?

Sounds like you like the 1911 platform. Why not a 9mm 1911? Seems to be a lot of choices..Kimber, RIA, S&W, Taurus, SIG, etc

What are your plans for your purchase? Are you wedded to the 1911 platform, or are you open to others? If you are interested in polymer pistols, check out an XDm.

I am a 1911 and revolver guy and I am partial to the Beretta 92 series for a 9mm. I love the ergonomics, the capacity, and accuracy. But they are not for everyone and there way too many options to list them all. The best advice I can give you is to go to a range that has a lot of rental guns and test them out and choose the model you like best.

Ktxdm9.... I'm a relatively new shooter so I'm not exactly wedded to the 1911 but you could say that I'm engaged.. What I really like about the 1911 is the trigger is there a good alternative for me to try out or should I go ahead and pull the knot? If I can't find anything else I'm going to buy a RIA 9mm

If you were looking at any glocks, the triggers can be easily modified to make a lighter, shorter trigger. Some companies even sell whole trigger groups if you don't want to replace springs and such yourself.. my glock 34 has an awesome feeling trigger just $30 later.

What role is this gun to play? What's your budget? If you want to stick with the 1911 platform (and I can't fault that), Kimber makes a lot of 9mm models in 4" and 5". Springfield's EMP is a great 3" 9mm. S&W and Springfield have a couple of nice offerings as well. A little higher up the ladder, Dan Wesson makes a couple models. Then you get into the truly high end guns; Wilson, Brown, Baer, etc.

Take a look at the Sig 226 or 228. My 228 has an excellent trigger that is one of the best DA/SA triggers I've shot. The HK P7 also has a very good SAO trigger, and is an interesting design as well.

It doesn't look like you like the ergonomics, you've added some kind of grip sleeve to FIX the ergonomics
odd.

That's what I was going to suggest - either that or the 22TCM/9x19 convertible they have out, if you want more capacity.

Well I really don't want to go over 600ish one of the main reasons for a 9mm is the price of 45acp. This would be mostly a range gun and a another HD gun. Also I like nice things if you know what I mean, I guess I'm a gun snob wannabe.

I'd keep an eye out for a deal on something lightly used. I just picked up a nice stainless p226 in your range. I love my cz75 also.

$560.71 - I paid this price recently for this exact gun, other than grabagun being a little slower on shipping than I would have liked (and they were reasonable for the 6-7 bucks they charge, really, I'm just impatient) it was a no-hassle transaction, I paid, got them a copy of my LGS's FFL, and they shipped it, ordering online was really no big deal

Both out of stock at the moment, but under your 6 bills budget, even with shipping and a transfer fee from a reasonable FFL ($25 is what I pay)

Interesting, I didn't know they made a 9x19mm in Officer's size - it looks like something I'd like:

$590.63 ... sorry, out of stock on this one as well

Wideners has used Sig 226s for $425 plus shipping (I actually just ordered one the other day). If you're ok with a bit of finish wear, it is definitely possible to find good guns in your price range.

if you want a 9mm that can shoot like your 1911, i have heard that the sig 226 should be up to the task. i havent shot one personally, but a feller i used to shoot with had one and he had nothing but exellent things to say about it.

That's just because I have very large hands. It doesn't change the angle of the grips just the width. I also have to use wide 1911 grips and revolver grips with generous palm swells.

Tele... What kind of shape was yours when you got it in? I don't have a place to rent a 226 and I'm scared the trigger pull will be similar to my USP or will it be more 1911ish?

No, a Sig 226 does not have a trigger pull anything like a 1911. It is a whole different style of trigger.

The SIG's and CZ's are of the DA/SA style same as the HK he had. So it comes down to a question of what was it that you didn't like about the HK USP? If you could simply not deal with the long pre-travel of the trigger when in SA mode then you won't like SIG's or CZ's or any other DA/SA trigger. At least you won't like them until you learn to ride the reset point. If you can work on that then you greatly reduce the amount of finger travel needed for each shot.

Another option that would keep you in the 1911 camp but give you a different gun would be to go for a Commander length 1911 in 9mm. A little shorter and lighter and it fits you just like your present 1911.

Or if you LOVE your .45's but it's simply the cost of ammo perhaps use the "gun money" to purchase a reloading setup. Even with .45's you can reload for under $10/50. The up front cost is a touch high but the initial equipment cost soon amortizes away and you are able to then shoot for a lot lower cost. Especially since you would be reloading "forty-somethings" which pay off the cost quicker than the smaller stuff.

smith and wesson m&p, taurus pt 92, beretta m92, cz 75b, sig 2022. there's a few I love my m&p and I'm an accuracy nut so that's saying something.

I actually haven't received the 226 yet (just ordered it late last week) but I do have a 228 that has the same type of trigger. It is DA/SA, but in my opinion is a much better trigger than the USP. From shooting and dryfiring the USP, it always feels like the DA is incredibly long and you are pulling it past the point where it should have already fired (I know, its an odd way to describe it, but I don't know any better way.) The Sig trigger is nothing like that.

The DA is about as close to a good S&W revolver as I've felt in an automatic, and has a good predictable break with no stacking, just a nice, smooth pull. The SA is a two stage, with a bit of light take up and then a nice clean break. If you learn to ride the second stage (and the reset after the shot) the trigger will be a very nice SA. Its not really like a 1911, but still a good and accurate trigger system.

I've seen a few reviews of Widener's 226s and they seem to be nice once they're cleaned up. They will have bluing wear on the slide, but other than that they seem to be perfectly serviceable.
