Just looking for something new and interesting to experiment with (accuracy before velocity).

Had good results with IMR4350.
 
Something different? Try H4831SC Hodgdon powder. H4831 Hodgdon are the same powder except for the SC (short cut). Powder weights are the same. Best reference are Lyman 48th edition and Sierra 5th edition load manuals.

Loaded for a friend of mine who has a .270 Winchester and he had three holes touching at 100 yards with a 140 grain Sierra Gameking. I use it in my .30-06 with about the same results (usually get two out of three touching at 100 yards. The third not far away).

Not the fastest fps powder, but accurate...
 
I like IMR 7828SSC. I use it in my hunting loads with a Sierra 130G BT Spritzer. Of the three deer I have shot this year two dropped in their tracks and the other somehow managed to make it about 20 yds. I use a Mossberg 100ATR in 270. The load it likes best is 60g IMR 7828SSC with the CCI Large Rifle Magnum primer in Federal cases, COL of 3.26 works the best for me in this rifle. I just got a Chrony and havent tested the FPS on this load yet (shame on me), IMR 4831 and IMR 4350 are great powders as well. I like the 4831 for any 150g bullets that I load. Anyways, there are a number of great powders for the 270 out there and after all, alot of the fun in reloading is coming up with "your" custom load.

The 140gr GK does very well in my rifle. The 135gr MK was a close second.

I think H4831SC was the one I was trying to think of earlier.

IMR 7828SSC sounds good too.

Not sure what makes a powder "interesting" or "uninteresting", but I would suggest RL19, H4350, and N160. H4831SC MAY give you an accurate load, but I guarantee you will not get a very high velocity load with it.

USSR...That's what I said. But he will see close to 3000 fps. Besides the deer, elk, or what ever, isn't going to notice the difference in velocity from one powder or another. I believe that accuracy and a well placed bullet is better then a bullet traveling 50,000 fps:what: . Don't you?:rolleyes:

I tried Rl22

I've been using the RL22 for 6.5x55. I briefly tried it in the 270. Didn't get good accuracy right off the bat, but didn't work with it much either.

By interesting, I meant something that's perhaps overlooked by most people.

Ah, Yes. But a bullet at 2900fps trumps the same bullet at 2750fps when they both have the same level of accuracy. When I do load development, I first find the level of performance (velocity) I want, then I go searching for the accurate load with that level of performance. Why settle for a slow accurate load when you can have an equally accurate, high performance load?

I just started loading for the .280 Rem. It is very similar to the .270 win.
First group after zero-ing was 1 1/4" with three touching, in fast fading light.
I was using a 145 gr Speer boattail bullet over 53 grains of IMR 4831. I did not get a chance to try the heavier loads of that powder, nor did I chrono it.
According to the books, IMR 4831 and H4831 are very similar. If I am not mistaken IMR 4831 will be, or has been, discontinued, since Hodgdon has acquired IMR powders, and they are so similar.
