I am having a heck of a time finding an original buttstock for a 20 gauge 870 express. Not a youth model, just a regular 870 20 gauge. Does anyone know where I should be looking? Does anyone have an old one laying around? Thanks!

I believe they are the same as 12 and 16 gauge stocks.
In fact, they're not. 20ga buttstocks are interchangeable with Remington 6, 760, 7600, 740, 742 and 7400 rifles that use the same small frame. 12ga 870 is large frame. Don't ask me how I found that out...

OK, I went and pulled measurements on my 20 gauge and my one of my 12 gauge 870's, just about 3/16" of difference between them on the thickness at the wrist. So just enough to mess things up on interchangeability. But they do have them listed on Numrich's as multi, and then there are a couple that says for 20 gauge as well.

That's what lead me to find out about the difference myself.

Thanks all, I saw the ones on numrich, was sceptical that 12,16,and 20 took the same stock. EBay has a few, but they're all "youth" or "compact". I just wanted a regular walnut buttstock to replace a cracked one. I don't really want to drop the money for something like a Boyd's but that may be the only real option.

Prior to 1977, the 20 gauge 870 was made on a 12 gauge frame.

After Thanksgiving I got a text from Remington showing all of the original shotgun stocks and replacement parts that were on sale. The had 20 gauge wood and synthetic stocks listed. I don't know if they are still on sale though. Good luck.

Good call Wis-Harpo, they are out of stock on the Remington website, but at least I have an actual part number to search for now, thanks!

I did notice some of the stocks on the Remington website were listed as
1100/11-87/870, any work if the stock is interchangeable between their pump and autoloaders?

870 not interchangeable with 100/1187. Semi-autos have a tube with action spring encased. Shorter bolt screw.
I own both 1187 and 870's.

Try MidwayUSA. Product #588856.
Synthetic stock combination. $69.95

That's a pretty good resource, especially for Mossberg parts. The search continues for this 870 Stock. I may end up just getting a whole new gun. The one stock I have seen for sale was nearly half the cost of a new firearm
