An old friend of mine has a 38 S&W Special CTG with serial number D317641. Unfortunately he isn't doing too well these days and need to help him sell it. Looking for help to find out how old it is and how much it may be worth. Thx.

Welcome to the forum. Sorry to hear about your friend.

Sounds like a K frame revolver probably built in 1971-1972

We would need more details, barrel length (measured from the front of the cylinder to the muzzle), fixed or adjustable sights, Blue or Nickle

Open up the cylinder and look on the frame for a MOD- 10, 12, 13,thru 15.

There should also be what is referred to as the dash number... ex.. Mod 15-5 etc.

Some pictures or at least a good evaluation of the condition would be helpful.

A beater might go for $250, Depending on the model and condition a pristine specimen could go for up to $500.

Thx Iggy. It is a model 10-5. To me it looks like it is in good condition. Picture is attached. Thx again!

Go here for some prices for Model 10-5's

Can't tell much from the small pictures. Appear to be standard barrels with appropriate square butt magna grips.

Go to Gun Broker.

http://www.gunbroker.com/

Type in Smith and Wesson Model 10-5

That will give you some ideas as to prices.

Having the boxes and cleaning tools and brochures, ups the price
