I was given a Haenel Schmeisser Model 1 Pocket pistol. It is in great shape. I took it to the local gun shop and asked the smith to check it out to see if it can still be fired. He acted as if he had no interested in helping me. He simply pulled back the slide and said he did not like how far forward the firing pin was when the slide was back. (it sticks out from the slide about 3mm when all the way back) He told me to keep it as a collectable and forget about firing it.

I took it apart and all the parts seemed to be intact, in good shape, and functioning. The only thing I did notice is the the main spring seemed a bit twisted when it was removed and laid out on the table.

Besides firing a few different autoloaders at the range I dont know a whole ton about guns. Only advice I was given was to load one round in the mag and pull back the slide with the gun pointed down range to see if the pin makes the gun go off without the trigger being pulled.

Are these 80 year old guns usually safe to shoot? If the gun in in good condition and the barrel tooks clean and free of defects is there any chance this thing is going to blow up in my hand?

I have seen a repro mag for sale online. Does anyone know if they sell spring kits for this gun?

Any help would be great! Or just a good gunsmith in the Grand Rapids Michigan area. Or anywhere in the lansing to detroit area.

By the way. I can post a pic of the location of the firing pin when the slide is back if it helps. (may take a day or two) Does anyone know if the pin is suppose to stick out or if should be flush with the slide?

Your gunsmith is not familiar with that gun. The firing pin sticks out because, as in the Colt Model 1908, FN Browning 1906, FN 1910/1922, Czech DUO and others, it is the ejector. When the gun fires, the slide is pushed back until the firing pin stops and protrudes from the slide, kicking the fired case out of the gun. (It should actually stick out a bit more than 3mm, just going by my eyeball.

Disassembly of that gun is tricky; if you need help holler.

The mainspring (firing pin spring) on those guns is sometimes kinked a bit, but it has a guide and shouldn't kink much. If you mean the recoil spring, it shouldn't kink at all; the guide rod is full length. Are both guides in place? They get lost sometimes, but the recoil spring guide rod holds the barrel in.

Thanks a bunch Jim. 3mm was just a guess from memory but as I think about it was a little more than 3. Yes it was the mainspring that was a little "curly/twisted" when taken apart and set on the table and yes I beleive all the parts are present per a schematic I found. The recoil spring is not kinked at all and the guide rod is in great shape.

And Yes it took me a while to figure out how to disassemble it the first time.

Since everything seems intacked and normal I think I will put a shell in it and see if it works as it should. From my memory I beleive my grandfather last fired it in the 1980's and it worked fine. After that it sat in a drawer untouched for 25 years.

FWIW, I have a LNIB Model One Schmisser 25 ACP pistol on sale on Gunbroker right now in case one would like to see a pic of one. GB 195161813. Not pushing a sale here, just info.

I have one as well, however I cant vouch for the firing pin. It has been broke since I was given it. If anyone ever comes across a firing pin, please let me know!

Here are some pics I took and a document that might help you in the future.
