Awhile back (when they first came out), I purchased a full sized XDm .40, and fell in love with the thing. I beefed it up a little by replacing the factory riveted trigger bar with a heavier solid one, and put a Springer Precision trigger kit in it that makes the trigger reset an absolute dream. I've also added a solid spring guide, some Dawson adjustable tritiums, and several other goodies. The only thing that disappointed me was the full size length. I simply prefer shorter pistols. I have several 1911's as well, and other than one full size, the rest are officer's models because I simply like the shorter barrel length. It's just personal preference.

So, after I have worked this thing over and sunk some cash into it, Springfield has to go and come out with the 3.8 or "compact" version. Great.:banghead: Why not offer this first as it would have been my preference? (I know. I'm just carping.)

Like anyone else, I am always looking for a good excuse to buy another gun. However, with today's economy, I really don't have an interest in spending a ton more money for an additional XDm, and then sinking a ton more money into it just to get it as nice as the full size I already have just to drop an inch or so of barrel length.

Is it possible to simply buy a 3.8 upper assembly (barrel, spring/guide, and slide) and use my original frame? If not, why? If so, where would I go to buy it? Is Springfield the only place to go? Where else would someone reccommend to purchase this (if possible)? Wouldn't it be cheaper since I'm not buying the entire gun? Since it isn't a lower, would I even need an FFL or a 4473 for that matter?

Any info would be appreciated on how to accomplish this. Thanks.

Contact SA. The 3.8 slide will work on a full size frame. It's just a matter of SA being willing to sell the parts you need for the conversion. Then there's the other option of removing your custom parts/sights, selling your XDm, and buying the XDm compact in .40 S&W and putting the custom parts/sights on it.;)
