I took a new GP 100 to the range today to do some sighting in. The distance was 25 yards to target.

I used three loads, all with 125 grain copper plated bullets and Unique powder: 7.0 grains Unique; 8.0 grains Unique; 9.0 grains Unique.

The loads printed high. Even with the rear sight completely depressed, it still printed too high for such a sight setting.

I'm thinking maybe a new optical front sight just a bit taller than stock.

Some questions:

a) Who would make replacement front sights for the GP100?

b) Would a taller front sight give me the correct sight picture I'm looking for while giving me significant adjustment up and down?

c) How do you remove the front sight on the GP 100?

Thanx in advance.

There's some super-height, unfinished fronts for the adjustable-sight GP here:

It wouldn't be TOO hard to drill a hole and glue in a fiber optic element at a custom height.

You can take your existing front, put some putty epoxy on top, then file it down to the right height so that you have something to use as a guide for the custom type.

Also: you'll find links to Bowen's rear sights there (left column) - one of those might be lower? Check with Bowen...

OH! And an aftermarket front for the Redhawk or SuperRedHawk might be taller than the GP100 factory front...and those are available in fiber optic. Check with Ruger to find out what the factory height are for each, or a vendor that sells fronts for all three might know. If that's the case, you might end up enjoying an Ashley Big Dot type meant for a Redhawk or SRH...

The Redhawk sites are taller. I put a gold dot front, deep V rear site for a Redhawk on my GP and had to use up just about all the upward elevation adjustment on the rear to sight it in.

Williams makes a sight set called a Fire Sight for the GP100 that uses the fiber optic inserts - different colors for front and rear. I really liked the set I put on my GP100. The front sight was taller than the original. MidwayUSA sells the set for about $39 here.

I put a firesight on my father in law's GP and he likes it alot.
the ruger sights are among the easiest to change out.

cheers,
Derek

I've got a Big Dot tritium front sight and Bowen Rough Country rear sight on my GP-100 and it is a very good combination. I chose the V-notch rear sight.
