the local WallyWorld has an Axis II with Accutrigger in 6.5 Creedmore. Plastic black stock. No scope. Standard weight barrel. They’ve got it at $297. I asked Mr Google but can’t seem to find any kind of going price. There’s all kinds of prices and packages all over the map.

IIRC, this is supposed to be a great shooting rifle. I’ve got a 7 Mag, so I really don’t need it, but I’ve got a really, really nice 3-12x50 Burris Signature Select Scope that just sitting on the shelf getting lonely.

So, is this good deal, great deal, or no great deal? Need your thoughts

Thx.

It's an OK, but not awesome deal. You can find it lower if you wait and shop around. Black Friday is just around the corner.

Well, I'm not real familiar with the Axis 2, but considering it's a Savage product for $297, I wouldn't be past trying one. (If you can get it for an even better price as mentioned in post #2, that's even better.) I recall hearing how that stock can be a problem, but at that price (or less) you have room to re-stock... Boyd's makes stocks to fit it.

Now, about that 6.5 Creedmoor round... regardless of what the fans are saying about how great it performs, I'd start with the fact that it burns a lot less powder than your 7mag. From the looks of it, it oughta kick a lot less, too... might be more enjoyable to shoot. I'd probably try it, considering the overall deal you're describing.

You already have the scope.

Its an OK deal, but not "good" imo.
Were it anything besides and Axis I would probably look pretty closely at it, but the Axis are really just not my cup of tea. You can get a much less rough rifle for another 50-100 bucks on sale.
Accuracy wise tho, it should hold its own with anything similar. Savage is nothing if not consistent at building accurate guns.

Guess I’d rather invest more and get something that’s not a project from the time you open the box. Thx for the replies
I had the Axis, and while it was accurate with a very good factory trigger, the magazine issue bugged me too much and I sold it. The ejection port is so small, that if the mag breaks, single loading is nearly impossible as well......

I spent a little more and got the Weatherby Vanguard- couldn't be happier!
The Howa 1500 is really the same gun, and I think it is a few bucks cheaper too. You can get them with integral or detachable magazines, and the mags are more robust, available in larger capacities, and cheaper to boot! Great rifles.

They are a great entry-level rifle, (certainly better that the Rem. 710/770) but their main flaws have been pointed out here. Might not be bad for what you want it for, something to put under a good scope; they certainly are capable of good accuracy. The price is not bad. I agree, wait for Black Friday; if no better deals materialize by then, and it still tickles your fancy, buy it.

The magazine latch on those things is very flimsy and replacements are NOT cheap.....
Not seeing the problem. The piece that locks the magazine in place is part of the magazine not the rifle. So in the unlikely case it did break you can just trash the mag and buy a new one. If the locking piece was part of the rifle you would really have a problem if it broke.

New mag is pricey.

I’ll take a Vanguard any day over a RAR, AXIS II, 783 or XPR.

I’ll also take a Vanguard over a Tikka but quality has nothing to do with it. I just don’t care for DBM’s and small ejection ports.

Ya, at $45 bucks a pop? That's 1/5 the price of the rifle, AND it pretty much renders it unusable in the field. I actually found the best way to single load the Axis is from below through the mag well, but it takes some time and dexterity which would be difficult in, say, a tree stand.....:(
