Hi all, this may seem odd to some. There is a local gun website similar to gunbroker in that they have guns, ammo, bows, all sorts of sporting items. The question is when registering they ask for your physical address. I know to some this may not be a problem, but it sort of feels odd. I am on 5 or 6 gun sites and they ask name, email, phone number etc. some don't even require a phone number. It just seems it pinpoints someone that may have guns. Does anyone else feel that is odd. I am sure anyone could find me if they had my name, I don't know if an email address will lead you to my house. Opinions please. No I don't have a tinfoil hat, no I am not wanting to do anything illegal. Thanks Mac

Yeah, Im with you on that one.

Doesn't mean they're not Popey the Sailor Man stand-up in intent - the potential for miscreants to data mine it leaves me felling a bit hinky about it.

I would get them wanting to confirm your local status but I'd still shy away given my own concerns and experiences.

Todd.

I might add that I know people that are on the site, but just gives me bad mojo.
Yup, I knew folks fully invested in Enron too. Tried to warn them but they all said they knew people who trusted the outfit.

I like the axiom: If you're not the seller and you're not the buyer.... you're the product.

I try to never inadvertently be the product.

If you can input main street (or 1 Main ST) and your town, zip and such this might be OK. Actual physical address would be a no go to me. Most only need the town or city so others can determine if you are local enough to reply I would think.
They might be trying to keep scammers and such out but it feels suspect.

If you must, perhaps a work address or maybe an empty lot address.

I would contact the site Admins and ask them outright why they need your address. There was a forum I wanted to join a few years ago that “required” your home address. The forum was a gun forum catering to the local area and they had a sales and trading page on the forum. I asked “Why?”. They said it was to make sure I had a local address. I asked if they controlled sales and billing info for the sellers on the forum. They said “No” so I gave them my work address. Apparently they looked it up and emailed me that the address must be a residence. I bailed with a “Have a nice day, but no dice.”
