Maryland...A Brady Bill Top 5 State /puke
I live in MD.

Apparently we're firing 64k state employees (I'm ok with shrinking state gov't), but then we spent $70 million to buy some land. I'm planning to write a letter to the editor about the costs of violent crime and how CCW seems to reduce violent crime rate as a cost comparison and go at shall-issue laws from a fiscal standpoint.

I'm trying to find a reputable source that quantifies the economic cost of violent crime in either the USA or Maryland specifically. Any help would be appreciated.

Here's one from the way back machine: link

It estimates the cost of violent crimes in 1987, both direct ($10 billion) and the extended costs over the next 3 years ($178 billion total). Its just what you're looking for, just 20 years ago.

I'll keep googling.

Yeah, it looks like the UK does a lot of quantifying the economic impact of crime - I've found a lot from Great Britain.

Here's one that lists a bunch of studies that you could probably pick through and find some helpful stuff: link

And you might want to shoot an email to the folks listed here, because they say they have "A state-by-state examination of the costs associated violent crimes (rape, assault, robbery and murder)", but you have to buy it to get the data, so you should check if its new and what you want first.

According to today's Washington Post, before the end of this year 67,000 Maryland employees will get some unpaid time off.

Those making under $40k get two unpaid days off. $40k to $60k get 4 days and over $60k get a week.

That's off the top of my head, I read it at 7 a.m. while the pc was booting up at the office.

Have you seen this one?
Economic Impact of Violence

Violence exacts an extraordinary economic toll.

Costs of Violence
Lots of embedded links - better to read it at the source.

BJS has a 1994 publication, the Costs of Crimes to Victims

Here's an online version of a report to the Minnesota House of Representatives (the original .PDF http://www.house.leg.state.mn.us/hrd/pubs/costcrime.pdf)

NIJ has this PDF : Measuring the Costs and Benefits of Crime and Justice(2000) and an earlier report Extent and Costs of Crime Victimization: A New Look and Victim Costs and Consequences: A New Look (I'd be cautious with the last two; Wiersema has a long publication record, mostly anti-gun. His work here might be right, but slanted the opposite way from what you hope to convey.)

A lot of the published stuff does seem to come from GB. That's not necessarily unusable, but the cross-country costs are going to be hard to describe and adjust to.

Which paper are you writing to? I doubt the Scumpapers (Baltimore "Sun Papers," as we natives call it) will print it. Actually, can't think of one that would print anything pro-gun. Good luck.
