My dad has some old Olin/WCC 30-30 cartridges that are a little green and corroded. He bought them new back in the mid 60's when he bought his Mod94. They've basically sat in a drawer over the years and he took out a box the other day and saw they were badly corroded on the outside.

My question is how can I safely dissassemble these rounds so I can dispose of them properly. I have a reloading setup and was thinking I could use my kenetic puller to remove the bullet, dump the powder and use the reloading press to deprime. I'd need to buy 30-30 dies for this but no problem there.

I started wondering if it would actually be safe for me to use a kenetic puller on these since they were so badly corroded. Should I try to find a puller die also for my single stage press?

How would you guys recommend me tearing these things apart so I can dispose of them properly?

Thanks

A kenetic puller will work just fine.

You might want to consider a Universal De-Priming Die, as you can use it for lots of other things.

If you use a 30-30 sizing die, you will be sizing the corroded cases.

Unless they are very badly / deeply corroded, you can probably clean them in a tumbler and shoot them.

Nah, I'm just wanting to tear this stuff apart so I can safely throw it away. Maybe try to clean up a few of the not so really badly corroded cases and reassemble them with inert product for display purposes. Maybe put all the powder from the cartridges into a metal pan so I can take it outside and throw a match on it so my 4 year old can watch it light off. He gets a kick out of fireworks and stuff.

I figure, I'll squirt a littl3 wd40 into the case after I get the bullet off and powder out to inert the primer before I remove it. I don't know exactly how old these cartridges are but I was surprised at how corroded these things were. When he brings them over, I'll take pics. He bought them when he bought his rifle new so that was back in the 60's. It may have been rounds that the old hardware store had from back in the 40'-50's that was still corrosive type ammo.

WD-40 will not kill the primers reliably, so don't bother trying.

It is perfectly safe to de-prime them live in a loading press die anyway.

If one were to go off (Very unlikely) everything will be contained in the die & press ram & frame. It's no more dangerous taking them out, then putting them in.

OK, good info to know. I've always been kind of leary of depriming unshot primers in the press. THe only 2 times I've done it, I was wearing ANSI glasses, a shield and heavy gloves, just in case.

Yeah, I looked pretty stupid and I really didn't have any protection for the rest of my body but at least I felt better about myself........

They aren't toxic chemicals. Bury them or drop them off a river bridge somewhere.

Unless the green crud is massive and deep, I'd clean 'em and shoot 'em.

On some of them, it's massive and deep. I just don't feel comfortable tossing live rounds away. Even burying, I know, when I was a kid I found ALOT of cool stuff when I went outside and started digging holes in the yard.

If you just have to pull them apart simply instal the correct shell holder in your press, no reloading die. Raise the round you want to de-bullet so the bullet comes thru the top of the die hole. Grab the bullet firmly with side cutters, channel locks, vise grips etc and simply lower the ram. Me, I'd clean off the corrosion with some steel wool and shoot them. YMMV.
