I got my 50 bmg back. She's been gone for a couple of years as half is owned by an inlaw.
I found the answer to some maintenance questions here on "The Road."
There was some bad rusting inside the trigger guard that I scrubbed off with a bore brush and Hoppes gun oil. The receiver ring also had rust. Unfortunately, the thin phosphate finish comes right off with the rust leaving bare steel gleaming under it.
Before looking here for a solution to bare steel, I went and painted the bare steel with black enamel.
It looks like hell, but much better looking than rust. The trigger guard is not noticeable, but the rceiver. ring is ugly.

50 bore brush ready for more Hoppes..
They just opened a new NRA range at Fife Lake Michigan. I shot this there yesterday. It is the neatest range I have ever seen and FREE!
If you wanna' fire a 50 sometime, meet me there! :)

I couldn't bring myself to buy a bullpup. I know they are safe but I just got a little nervous being that close to the end of the barrel!

As ugly as I am,,, having my face next to the chamber, I think, scares the gun as much as it scares me.:) Since I load it down to about 2550 fps the pressure is low and the velocity is high enough to punch holes in paper targets. The recoil is what I call mild and a pleasure to shoot. The bolt/chamber/barrel are very strong and make up about 95% of the 32 pounds of the gun so I'm not worried.

Duracoat??? hmmm I'll look into that, but I have ordered some Birchwood-Casey Aluminum Black from Amazon and it is due to arrive tomorrow. It's supposed to work on steel too.
