When I graduated high school my Dad passed his S&W 39-2 down to me. When my younger brother graduated I passed it down to him because he didn't own any guns at all and I figured that he would need a gun to defend himself wherever he decided to go to college.

He never carried it, but when he got married recently things fell into perspective. He changed his mind on some things and recently we took a class together so he could get his CCW permit.

He ran the old S&W at the class and now two weeks later his gun is broke!

Does anyone know where I can find the parts to repair it? I could use some help locating a safety for it.

Try Smith & Wesson first, then watch ebay and gunbroker for the complete slide assembly. As expensive as that might be, you rarely see the safety offered alone, and you might be able to resell the other slide parts off to defray the costs.

How fortuitous! Thanks! Those are for a S&W 39 though. Mine is a 39-2 do the parts share commonality?

And holy smokes is that expensive for a safety..........

They quit making the 39-2 in the mid 1980's, so you are talking almost 30 years. Price a current ambi safety for a Browning Hi Power, or a a high end safety for a 1911. $50 for the safety and a few other spare parts is a bargain. 39 and 39-2 take the same safety.

I suggest waiting a couple of weeks until they are back from vacation, and giving a call to S&W. The gun is old but with a safety matter they might be willing to repair it free. At worst, all it will cost is a phone call or an e-mail.

Jim

If you roll snake-eyes with S&W, Numrich appears to have them:

Looks like ~$65 for the main (LH side) piece. Not so lucky on the smaller parts, but your existing small parts should be re-useable.

I agree with Jim K though...if S&W has the parts, I'd much rather send them the slide and pay them to do it right.

I've never actually seen a safety break like that. If it were brandy/fairly new, I'd say a casting imperfection. After thirty years of (assuming) some use...? It's not a highly-stressed part.

Of course, that one on eBay for $38 doesn't sound like a bad option either...you have five days to think about it. :)

Nice to have some choices.

Nonetheless, please let us know how it works out.

Well I heard back from S&W and here is what they said.

Dear Customer,

We would like to thank you for your e-mail and interest in our products. For 161 years, Smith & Wesson has manufactured high-quality, innovative, firearms for professionals and consumers alike.

Unfortunately, the part/s that you are requesting have become obsolete and are longer available.

There are places that specialize in used parts and have lots of older hard to find inventory. These are great resources for individuals who are trying to repair or restore an older firearm that we no longer manufacture or have parts for.

That's not very encouraging news. I guess the old 39 heirloom might just be a paper weight now.

Calm down orion.

Its my brother's gun so he gets to decide how he wants to go about repairing it. I've sent him the links you've all posted but since he just spent $250 getting his carry permit, $65 for a piece of mim steel may be a little out of his price range right now.

He wanted it to be factory repaired if possible but it doesn't look like S&W wants to touch it so he may elect to save up for a new gun that he can get parts and accessories for more easily.

You came here looking for options--or a shoulder to cry on. (?)
We've given you both. Do with them as you will.

If your brother sits on the idea of buying that safety too long, one of us here on THR should buy the set of parts, sell the others, THEN list the safety for $60. It would still be a bargain. He may end up a snoozing loser.

Oh. Now you've done it. You've gone and hurt my feelings.

He's aware, but it's his decision. Like I've said, I'm just the middle man. I told him I would help find parts, send him the information, and do the repair if I could. He doesn't have an account here and doesn't want one so I'm doing it for him.

Thanks to that comment though I'll be sure not to recommend any parts listed here now. That would be a very low road thing to do.

Geez, Gun Parts Inc has all the safety parts in stock.
Everything will run you about $100

Jack First has them listed as well
068370000 is the part number for just the safety, if you lost detens or springs ask them is they will sell everything combined as an assembly.
Price is normally higher than Gun Parts

"Thanks to that comment though I'll be sure not to recommend any parts listed here now. That would be a very low road thing to do. " One man's low road is another man's free enterprise on ebay. I've been trying to get the point across, to either you or you brother, that that auction on ebay is a GOOD DEAL. Note the quote above for $100 for the safety and related parts. I don't care, at this point, what you do, but don't trash the common business practice of "buy low, sell high". I'm not making a dime, yet......:D

Talk about low road...you come here for help, you are offered multiple options, and you piss on everyone.
Great job.
I'm sure everyone will go out of their way to help you next time.
