Never bring a hammer to a gunfight!

http://www.nbc4columbus.com/news/2939546/detail.html

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- A customer subdued a robber with a 2-pound sledgehammer at a local pizza shop Saturday night, NewsChannel 4's Erin Tate reported.

A ski-masked gunman attempted to rob Stoney's Pizza on Lockbourne Road, Tate reported. As cashiers fled to a cooler, the armed man demanded that all of the customers drop to the floor. Witnesses said the man searched an office for money, but couldn't open a register. That's when he tried to get away.

"He already had tape on his license plate. He had it blacked out," customer J.R. Croy said. "The door was open and the van was running. He was on his way out."

Surveillance cameras then showed the quick thinking of Croy (pictured, right). He slipped out a back door and used his truck to block the robber. He then used a sledgehammer to subdue him.

"I was sitting here with the hammer, and he pointed the gun up at me," Croy said.

A Franklin County sheriff's deputy determined later that it was only a paintball gun, but Croy didn't take any chances.

"After hitting him in the head with a hammer four times, he wouldn't go down," Croy said.

Emergency crews reponded. The robber was handcuffed and hospitalized. The pizza shop gave Croy a $500 reward. He said he would use the money to pay some bills.

There's courage, and there's stupid. Sometimes it's hard to tell which is which! :what:

So, should he have used a lighter, faster hammer? Does this put an end to the Big & Slow vs. Light & Fast debate?

Who makes a good hammer holster, anyway? Would a shoulder rig be better than IWB?

:D

Who makes a good hammer holster, anyway?

"Carpenter's jeans" as they are called. Already have a hammer loop on the side....

Good lord how thick was that guys skull that he took 4 hits to the head from a sledgehammer and was still standing. :what: I guess if they weren't solid hits but still...

The one time I have come very close to using deadly force, was against a man armed with a hammer. It works both ways, you never want to take a hammer to a gun fight. Although in my case, the gun was a M1911A1 with 230gr JHP, not paint balls.

Rule #1 of a gunfight is ... have a gun.

But if you don't have a gun?

Ultimately, the gun is not the weapon. The man is the weapon.

While I question the wisdom of this pizza-guy, chasing down the robber for no discernable reason, I have to applaud him for his understanding of the concept.

I would bet big money that this guy, somewhere, sometime, saw the opening sequence of the movie "2001". Arthur C. Clarke, and Jeff Cooper, would be proud of his unwillingness to meekly submit to Just Another Freaking Goblin (JAFG).

Incidently, I sent this story to Kim DuToit today. He won't post it, because it doesn't add to the Goblin Count (the Goblin lived), but it surely qualifies as A Nobel Effort.

For the record, if it weighed two pounds, it was not a sledge hammer. Webster defines a sledge hammer as a large heavy hammer that is wielded with both hands. A two pound hammer is easily wielded with one hand, I did it today for a couple hours.

Some guys skulls are thicker than others. But even a guy with a skull 10% thicker than average should be affected by a solid blow from a single jack.

Don't like a hammer for a weapon?
How about a bottle of salad dressing:

Kitchen Knife No Match for Bottle of Salad Dressing

A British armed robber thought his knife would be enough to convince a shopkeeper to open the cash register — but he hadn't reckoned on her skills with a squirt bottle of salad dressing.

"He came in and produced a knife and said, 'Give me the money out of the till,'" said Lorraine Avery, 48, according to London's Daily Telegraph.

"I thought, 'He's not having our money, I've worked hard for it' ... The nearest thing was a big bottle of salad cream so I grabbed it and squeezed it all over his clothes," she told a court in Stafford, England, yesterday.

Michael Watt, 18, backed out of the store and ran out into the street. Police caught up to him following a trail of salad dressing, which was also all over his clothes.

Watt got a sentence of 3½ years for attempted robbery. The judge also recommended that Avery get a bravery award.

I was slow on the hammer draw once............25 years ago.... working in an electronics store with outside entrance at a mall. I'm at the desk in the back room doing the deposit and daily report when the only other employee runs past me and out the back door into the access hallway. When I turned around, a revolver was pointed at my face....looked like a 44 but that's just because I knew nothing bigger existed at the time...it could have been a 22 for all I know. Anyway he got mad when he realized how little money I could surrender and ordered me out into the store to empty the cash drawers. This man wasn't a beginner. Backing out into the store he tripped and fell over a box onto his back on the floor. I noticed a hammer inches from my hand on a tabletop. I grabbed it. He recovered and pointed his revolver at me. I dropped the hammer and turned and ran out the back door down the access hallway to the main mall entrance scared I'd be shot in the back. It wasn't a great evening. I'm not sure if a good hammer holster would have helped but I am certain a pistol in my belt would have changed the eaquation. I can easily go along with the maxim about not bringing a hammer to a gunfight.

The really sad thing is that no one knew the difference between a paint ball marker and a real gun.

As different as night and day.

Great (maybe formerly Great would be better term) Britain, Australia, New Zealand will now have to ban hammers and salad dressing!

The country formerly known as Great.

Perfect re-name, don't you think?

Don't bring a gun to a sledgehammer fight...

Quick-thinker...:p

A fake gun proved no match for a sledgehammer in an Ohio attempted robbery, reports WEWS-TV of Cleveland.

Customers were eating in Stoney's Pizza (search) in Columbus Saturday night when a man came in wearing a ski mask and waving a gun around.

The shop's staffers locked themselves in a walk-in refrigerator. Customers lay on the floor while the gunman searched an office for money and tried to open a cash register, both in vain.

Finally the robber gave up and started walking out. He hadn't noticed that a customer had slipped out the back door and was waiting outside for him.

"He already had tape on his license plate," J.R. Croy told the TV station. "The door was open and the van was running. He was on his way out."

Croy bashed the robber in the head with a 2-pound sledgehammer. Four times.

"He wouldn't go down," Croy explained.

Police and paramedics soon arrived to take the gunman to the hospital in handcuffs. His weapon turned out to be a paintball gun.

The pizza shop gave Croy $500 for his trouble, but he says he's no hero.

"I'm sure others in the store," he shrugged, "if they'd had that opportunity, would've done it."

Four hits to the head before he went down? Either Croy wasn't very strong or the robber had no brain, just solid bone...lol
