Genghis Khan?
Didn't he do a pretty good job? (seriously asking, don't know).

I think when brutality is accepted, land war in asia is fine. Anyway Genghis Khan was pretty damn impressive, hard to find a leader as strong as him nowadays, society frowns on them (please don't say George Bush hehe).

Anyway I think it's the size that's the problem. Genghis Khan never finished conquering China, the Japanese never conquered China completely during WW2.

And anybody that tried to take Russia lost.

The Japanese chased the Chinese Army 6000 miles in the '30s and were never able to pin them down to a fight of one on one, that the Japanese were sure to win. So the Japanese tried to "lure the tiger out of the mountains" by killing so many millions in the city. The Chinese were not drawn out to defend their cities because they knew if 5 million had to die for China to not be taken, then that was the way it would be.

Same thing when Sir Winston failed to save Coventon, UK because it would have tipped the Germans to their code must have been broke.

War is hell, and the leaders must make sometimes brutal decisions.

Memorable Quotes from
The Last Starfighter (1984)

Grig: I've always wanted to fight a desperate battle against incredible odds.

Alex Rogan: One gunstar? Against the whole armada? It'll be a slaughter!
Grig: That's the spirit!
Alex Rogan: No, MY slaughter!

Alex Rogan: Teriffic. I'm about to get killed a million miles from nowhere with a gung-ho iguana who tells me to relax.

never get involved in a land war in Asia

I am going from distant memory...The book The American Cesar is biography of General Douglas MacArthur. The book says towards the end (1964?), when his health was failing he advised the President to not get involved in a land war in Asia.

Any topic that touches on Douglas MacArthur, WWII, Napoleon, and The Princess Bride is bound to be interesting.

Unfortunately, it's also off-topic.

Wacki, consider posting this over at APS.
