Hey guys,

I thought I would share some pics of my family’s newest addition. Isn’t she cute? :D I’m not sure exactly when she was born but she is NIB and was delivered yesterday to my FFL. The delivering Dr. in this case is Mr. Kevin Wells (aka “Zrek” here on this forum). I responded to his ad in the B, S and T section of the forum and inquired about a couple of different models. He did not have the models I was interested in stock but checked with his distributor who did have them in stock. If you are looking for a new Remington Police model SG (or other models and maybe other brands?) then I highly recommend Kevin. His service was fast and professional and his prices kick butt. I am a very happy camper. Before I ramble some more, here are some pics….

As you can hopefully see from the less then stellar pics, this is a Remington 870 Police Magnum, order # 4903. It has an 18” IC barrel with bead sight, 2 shot ext., parkerized finish and wood furniture. I debated a little bit about the furniture. The Speedfeed stocks are nice, probably a little bit more durable and I do like evil looking black rifles and shotguns but in the end decided on wood. Biggest reason was the more pics I viewed of park’d 870 with wood furniture, the more I fell in love. Reason 2 was it does make it look a little bit more like a hunting SG. I figured if I ever have to use it for its intended purpose, it would be a little less likely to get any funny looks or comments from LEO’s or DA’s  . Lastly the wood version is about $40 cheaper. Not a big deal but a nice added bonus.

I consider this SG to be setup pretty much perfectly from the factory for my purposes but I do have a few minor tweaks in store for it. I already have an order coming from Brownell’s that includes a Wolff X-Power magazine spring, Scattergun Technology follower and oversized safety button and lastly, a Marbles (Trijicon?) Tritium bead replacement sight. I also plan to shorten the LOP. It is too long as it is, especially for HD uses. I plan to take it down about ½” at a time until I get it were it fits and handles “right”.

I will also be placing an order with Northwest Reloading Supply. They have a very good selection of different 12ga defensive loads. I plan to get a 5-shell box of each of the different offerings they carry to see which performs best in this shotty. Depending on the results of those tests, I may consider sending the barrel out to VangComp for Hans to work his magic (but no porting please). Sorry for rambling but I’ve been wanting and waiting for one of these for a long time now so I’m pretty “pumped” about it. :D

Very nice. I have the same configuration save that mine has the polished blue finish, vintage 1989.

Please answer a question for me if you would. I note from the pics that the muzzle is even with the end of the magazine extension. So, how long is your barrel, measured inside from the muzzle to the bolt face with the bolt closed? I've been wondering whether they shortened the mag extension or lengthened the barrels on the new guns. Looks much better either way IMHO.

I'd skip the big-head safety, YMMV. I never found the need for one. YMMV and you can always change it back.

I never had any problems with the factory follower and magazine spring. Never hurts to have spare magazine springs though, I bought a ten- pack of OEMs just to be on the safe side 8^).

Find someone with a bore guage and let them measure the bore in that barrel before you try to get anything done to it. The last 18" Police barrel I messed with turned out to be (as near as we could tell) a factory backbored barrel with a .739" bore and a .729" choke for a legit ten points of choke or ImpCyl, just as it was marked. There was nothing else to do with it save shoot Hornady TAP and Kent/Brenneke KO slugs through it, I didn't want to spend any more money on it to put in choke tubes and that was the only option at that point.

As Shotgunsensei Dave says, BA/UU/R. You already have a winner, all it needs is shooting.

Hi Lee,

Thanks for the reply and info. I will try to answer your questions the best that I can.

The barrel is 18.5"

Don't know how much truth there is to it but I have read more then one account of Remmy factory ext. mag springs binding and\or factory followers breaking. I viewed the replacements as cheap insurance. The oversized safety may end up being a waste too but again, it didn't cost much and as I was already ordering stuff, I figured it wouldn't hurt to at least try it. As you point out, if it turns out to be unwanted, it will be easy to go back.

As far as the barrel and VangComp... my plan is to try a number different, high quality, defensive loads to see how well they each pattern. Assuming at least one patterns well I will consider that good enough and just stock up on that particular load. If more then one does well I will pick the best of the bunch. If, for some strange reason I can't find a load that patterns to what I consider acceptable (which I realize is not likely), then off to a pro it will go. There are no good smiths around here that I am aware of.

On the note of different loads, I see that Hornady makes 2 different TAP loads. One is apparently for pumps and one is a little hotter for Semi-Auto's. Obviously you wouldn't want to try and use the one designed for pumps in a Semi but I can't think of any reason not to try the Semi load in my pump? Would you agree or is there some reason why I shouldn't bother to at least try it?

Thanks again for the input! :)

AFAIK, the newer 870P's are coming with 18.5" bbls, so that probably explains why the mag extension no longer extends past the end of the bbl.

You are correct, I had it backwards. I checked it last night and it is indeed 18.5" and I edited my other post to correct that misinfo.

To everybody. Thanks for the compliments. I am very happy to have it but make no mistake, it will not be a safe queen!

very nice. I love pics, even if the gun is completely stock. Oh, we'll need a range report, too. :D
