Roger that Shung. What do you use to a) strip, b) stain, and c) finish? I have a pretty nice Romanian SKS that I want to give a nice treatment to...like you did there. The wood is pretty decent with much fewer dings and dents that one sees on many milsurps. Looks like birch or beach maybe...stained sort of red.

Anyway, that may be the nicest looking AK I have ever seen!

very nice, I think all aks look better with wood pistol grips. Excluding AK74 with polymer furniture.

Wow, the dark finish is actually VERY good looking on an AK. I've never seen a comparison like that. I'm strangely (and for the first time) attracted... hmmm... :)

No, the nicest AK is my genuine vietnamese AK-47 !

Now, to explain how I treat the wood.. well, I'll try to explain but I might miss a lot of english vocabulary.. anyway, I'll try..

1st, I remove the original paint/varnish using a proper paint stripper..

than, I slightly sand what remains of it... when I got the natural wood underneath, I degrease it, just in case.

After that I make the wood swollen slightly using a wet piece of tissue and an iron, or just vapor if your iron can do it. and I sand it again, with very fine sandpaper.. i do that a couple of times until I can't see any scratch anymore..

then, I clean it quickly with a humid tissue...

after that, you may tint the wood first, or directly apply the varnish that you like.. What I chose was a middly glossy oak varnish.. I put 2 different layers every 12hours... sanding it with a VERY FINE sandpaper in between each times..

after that, I polish it slightly one last time with "steel wool" to get a more used and matte finish.. After that, I oil it carefully with some lubricant.. and here you are..

I hope it's clear enough.. unfortunately, it's all my vocabulary allows me.

Yeah, I wasn't really sure where IKEA's from. I knew it started with an "S" and I was just too lazy to Google.

Just messin', that is some fine looking furniture. :D

Incredible improvement, you should be proud of your work. Also, your English is fine, as I have heard much worse from people born in the United States. Again, that is one FINE looking AK.

I do like the lighter wood, but you've done a superb job refinishing it. Well done!

It's not that I really hate the lighter woods, but they look like they are more "cheap" stuff.. when you make something darker, it "looks" stronger and more precious :p

    Looks great.
I was sooooo afraid that after the first quote of, "and now, after the usual treatment my AK's get"
I was gonna scroll down and see that good looking Norinco transformed into a POS with a bunch of Tacticool plastic accesories on it.
Lets just say i was pleasantly surprised!

Ahhhh a touch of worldliness and culture for the evening.;)

That AK is just magnificent. I love the dark wood on it. gives it a subdued and classy but very purposeful look.

    Excellent work.

No need to apologize regarding your English. I understood you completely. We should apologize as very few of us speak anything other than English. Few of us would be able to converse in German, French, or Italian on a Swiss forum at all.

So it sounds like you are using good, general-purpose, wood finishing products. I think that will work fine with my SKS.

Thanks Shung for a showing us all what can be done.
