New Bolty, Savage Mark II accuracy.

I have never really had an "accurate" rifle. MOA was meters of accuracy, mostly my shooting, standing, un supported, at shorter ranges. Plinking and such.

Looking around for a bolt action I saw these accu-trigger savages, and really like the way they felt. after looking around at them I ended up with a Bull Barrel free floated vented thumbhole stock 22 lr about a week ago.

bought 22lr, because I have ammo for it, I can actually afford to shoot it. And I shoot paper, which isn't good for eating anyway.

What surprised me though was the accuracy of this gun. Using some federal auto match bulk pack, lead round nose. I bought when I couldn't get anything else. ( got 9k rounds of 22 now ) I sighted it in, cardboard box for support, left hand for holding the stock against the shoulder. Sighted in at 25 yards. got 2 shots in the same hole at the center X and one flyer maybe .25 off the others.

The flyer was my fault I realized after I had an odd goal. I wanted to hit a penny at that range. Went out Saturday, taped some pennies to a cardboard box at 25 yards, on the rickity table I was using, shot one round, and hit it. Two other people hit pennies as well, at the same range. My wife did it on the first shot, ( first time with the gun, never shot off support, and she hates scopes ) and a friend did it after 3 tries.

After I bought this gun read somewhere that these can do sub MOA even with 22lr. I doubted that for awhile but I don't doubt it anymore.

I'll add a picture of the one recovered penny when I get the camera out. 2 of the pennies went through 4 layers of cardboard into a muddy backstop.

I have the same rifle. Shooting 20ga hulls at 100m is so easy it gets boring.

Yeah, I've got the version with the Williams peep and Lyman globe. Pretty stinkin' accurate.

I can put 100 rounds in minute-of-my-hand at 30-50 yards easy. When I actually put some seriousness in it, around 1 moa is not hard at all at 50 yards. I shoot it better than any of my other guns.

I just picked up a Savage .22 bolt myself on Memorial Day and fired it today. I spent the past week on rounding up some ammo and doing a little polish job on the bolt/internals..

I was rather impressed with the accuracy of the rifle using bulk ammo and the cheap simmons scope that came with it. Alas, mine does not have the Accutrigger.

I bought the rifle on sale for 149.99 on sale at Dick's SG. How I loath that store. I manage to only go there about 4 times a year.

I can't wait to pick up some "worthy" ammo to run in it.

If you can find some, try some of the federal "auto match" ammo. was a bit more than standard bulk ammo. $13 for 325 rounds. But it's really accurate through this gun, and cheaper than all the other "match" ammo.

Try some standard velocity, or some Aguila subsonics to really see the accuracy potential of the MkII. And for a real thrill, try a box of SK Standard Plus. It's too expensive for plinking, but it's the best ammo I've tried in a MkII- better than Lapua Midas, even.

I plan on taking it out to 100 yards sometime and trying a few types of ammo I have in it. see what it does with various bulk ammo.

I just got one Friday and fired it Sunday. Mine is not a bull barrel but very accurate. If I held it steady it was shooting sub 1/2" groups at 50 yards. I picked the standard barrel over the bull barrel because I want to use it for grouse hunting. I may get a bull barrel later though. Maybe a .17 HMR just to have something different.

We were at the familey picnic this past spring, which always turns into the familey shootin' match after the big feed is over with, and out came the high speed low drag, super sexy, expensive, fully customized pride of the Uncle Mike's .22 arsenal.

Now, I'm gonna' kick some butt with this thing... no doubt.. right?
Hell it cost more than I make in two weeks so it has to be awesome....

Long story short... I got my arse handed to me by my sis-in-law sporting a Savage Mark II Classic... yep, my customized 10/22 just couldn't cut it that day.

In all fairness to the old guy with the 10/22, we did let her shoot rested at
50y while the old guy shot kneeling at 50y-

But the point is, one does not have to spend big or even moderate amounts of cash to obtain top knotch accuracy and reliability.

I love my Mark II it is the pre-accu trigger but very very accurate rifle.

My Mark II BV is sub MOA at 50 yards with cheap match ammo.

At 25 yards you could hunt houseflies.

I think with a better trigger it would be a 1/4 MOA rifle at 50 yards. I've shot a few 0.3" groups, and I have a .2" 3-shot group.
