Sent a letter to my house rep:

I am writing this letter to bring your attention to an odious bill recently introduced by Congressman Bobby Rush of Illinois. HR 2666 also known as "Blair's Bill" is a direct attack on law abiding firearm owners. Requiring registration of handguns will have zero effect on violent crime as criminals are inherently unlikely to comply with such a mandate. Canada has tried to implement a similar program of registration and it has turned out to be a massive drain on the taxpayers with no appreciable gain. The only purpose registration schemes such as this serve is as a pretext towards confiscation. I urge you to do everything in your power to derail this bill. Thank you.

Let's make sure we write and call about this one. Most of us think that it will not go anywhere, but we need to make our voice heard now so they don't even waste their time introducing bills like these!

Oh yeah, and it came from a Chicago politician...what a shocker.

The criteria for obtaining a license to own firearms would be even more restrictive than obtaining a CCW permit in NC.

You would need to pass a written firearms exam showing knowledge of safe storing, safe handling, risks of having firearms around the home, use of firearms (and risks of such), and all legal responsibilities of owning a firearm. Assuming you pass that, which will no doubt be horribly biased and factually incorrect, your name, address, place of birth, photo, fingerprints, and signature will be on kept on file by the federal government.

This is unreal.

Was your post deleted?

Here's why:

It had nothing to do with stating what actions you were going to undertake regarding this bill, nor did it shed any light on the situation at hand.

If you want to go whine and cry, do it somewhere else.

I thought I would share the response I received from my house representative Ric Keller, 8th District Florida. It may be a form letter, but it's nice to hear a rep that's pro-rights. :D

Thank you for contacting my office regarding the Second Amendment. We are in complete agreement on this issue as I am a strong supporter of our Second Amendment rights. The right to bear arms must be protected.

It is my view that enforcing the existing laws already on our books will do far more to reduce gun violence in America than the passage of any new laws or regulations. We need to focus on swift, certain and severe punishment for those who commit crimes with guns rather than on efforts which do not have a real and significant impact on deterring violent crime.

In addition, I do not support the use of taxpayer dollars for lawsuits against firearms manufacturers. That's why I supported H.R. 1036, "The Lawful Commerce in Arms Act of 2003" which would put an end to these frivolous lawsuits. Not only do these lawsuits compromise our Second Amendment freedom, they also fail to effectively address the root of the gun violence issue. The only way to curb gun violence is to hold criminals directly responsible for their crimes, and to strengthen the enforcement of current laws.

As the great colonial patriot George Mason once said, "To disarm the people is the best and most effective way to enslave them..." Likewise, I have always been, and will continue to be, a firm supporter of Second Amendment rights.

Thank you again for contacting my office. I look forward to hearing from you on future matters of interest or concern.

Sincerely,

Ric Keller
