By the way, can you use it on burglars or people attacking you on your property?
Can you use it? Yes. Is it legal? No.
We have to store our toys in safes or strong cabinets or securely locked room at all times. Restricted guns need to have trigger locks employed during storage as well.
There are three classifications of firearms:
non-restricted for most non fully automatic rifles with 18.5 inch or longer barrels;
restricted for handguns with minimum barrel length of 106 mm;
prohibited for handguns less than 106 mm and full auto rifles including those on a "prohibited list". As well there is a 10 round limit for handgun magazines and a 5 round limit for rifles except for the M1 Garand and the 10 rd Ruger rotary .22 lr and the tube magazine lever rifles i.e. Marlin 1894C.
There are a few other exceptions to these rules regards barrel length and capacity.
Ammo has to be stored in a separate locked container.
Given the above rules, use of firearms for home defense is possible but not likely, due to the amount of time it would take to go to safe, open it, unlock the pistol, unlock the ammo, etc.
I heard about a guy who kept a loaded shotgun at his bedside. One time police were called to his house (don't know what for, but unrelated to his guns) and in the course of securing his house, saw the piece. Poor SOB had all his toys confiscated for improper storage of firearms.
Will a 5" work? Didn't Davidson's have a 'special' run of SRH-grey 5" GP100s a few years back? I did get a S&W 5" half-lug 686+ a few years back - great bargain, as a 'Stocking Dealer Exclusive', it was cheaper than a regular 4" 686! Will 5" suffice up North - or must it be 6"?
5" is good. 1911 Commander is restricted, its 4 1/4" barrel barely makes minimum length. I've not comes across those models you mentioned, but would have instantly sprung for them.
