Well the wife and I are in the new house! I won't say "settled" because with our remodeling plans "settled" isn't going to happen for about a year :rolleyes:

Regardless, it occurred to me last night that local law and the layout of our property are such that I could -probably- get away with shooting .22 in my back yard if I desired.

I don't think I'm going to take that risk but I AM going to set up some targets and have some airgun fun tonight!

Oh, does anyone know if the Gamo "Whisper" is actually quiet and/or worth buying for fun plinking?
 
$200 for a silencer (Tac-65), $200 for the tax. It's closer than you think, when you're talking about getting a $150 airgun.
 
Gamo is extremely quiet, and high powered. They hunt small game with them in Europe.

On a side note, my brother shoots his in the basement for night time fun.

As for shooting a .22 in your backyard, get some subsonic rounds and you should be ok :)

It's not the neighbors, it's the folks on the golf course nearby.
On the other hand it might keep 'em off my fence when they come after their balls. (DUH folks, the gate is wide open, don't climb on my fence and break it, I've got enough other stuff to do!)

(Seriously, anybody who hooks a ball -so hard- as to have it land in the end of my yard needs to seriously consider it a lost ball and probably needs to consider a whole other sport!)

But I digress.
I have one -decent- air rifle and a couple of nicer air pistols and now that I can set up my own mini-range I think I'm going to expand the airgun collection over time :)

Had a friend that used to live right off the fairway for a par 4. People were ALWAYS hooking balls into his property including hitting windows. His balcony wasn't safe to be on if someone was taking a shot.

Funniest part was watching people climb his fence to get their balls and seeing his HUGE rottweiler laying at the ball looking at the golfer like "come get, I dare you". Dog had a nice collection going behind his dog house.

You have the perfect retirement plan. Get a chaise lounge, a good book and a large suction cup. Go out in the yard, put the cup on you forehead, relax on the lounge, and read your book.

When a golf ball comes bouncing into your yard, pull the suction cup off (leaving a large red mark on your forehead) and lie down beside the ball -- and wait for the golfers to offer you money.:evil:

For all the balls that *do* end up getting left in your yard... I don't know if you're a golfer, but you can probably take them down to the pro shop, or ebay or somewhere, and fetch .50-1.00 each depending.

I'd just save up and get a .22 silencer. It will be quieter than the airgun, and more fun too. :)

Silenced 9mm subsonic is also very quiet if you've got the backstop/etc for it.

LMAO, but I believe is has been ruled in court that golfers are not liable for damages caused by errant shots during a golf game.

If only shooters enjoyed the same protection.
 
When loaded with .22 shorts, my Marlin 39 is so quiet I can hear the hammer fall.

You'd better be sure of your local laws AND your HOA rules though, just so you know where you stand.
 
As a bona-fide bucolic denizen, I can attest to the joys of spacious living on a little piece of well-removed heaven...far from the decadence and strife of the city, and just close enough to be able to fetch the necessary provisions without having to mortgage the land to buy fuel for the trip.

With 2 acres, and the prospect of buying another 2 adjacent acres...complete with a nice little rentable house and storage building...I'm a happy old geezer.

I just moved as well and got 6 acres.

Went over to talk to the only neighbors that would be affected by my shooting (sound) to tell them I would be shooting, hope you don't mind and please don't call the cops.

They were real happy; they were afraid some anti with a stick between the cheecks would buy the place and complain about them shooting.

Home, sweet home.

That's an idea. Shoot every ball you see. Watch their faces as they pick each of their balls up with a .22 bullet in them. :p
 
that way they could tell their buddies at the 19th hole that they have a hole in one....and show it to them

Bucolic Denizen - May I use that?

We live on 20+ acres that is part of the original section settled by my wife's ancestors in 1859. Closest town is eight miles away and the neighbors are great folks. We shoot on the property, as do some of the neighbors. I highly recommend Bucolic Living.
 
Well my little place is just an acre but it's bordered on one side by a golf course so it -feels- a lot bigger and considering the previous place was a 900 sq ft apartment..... :)

"Only" an acre is a vast estate compared to an apartment. Beware!
Land ownership begets the desire for more elbow room. :D

I live on a private road 100 yards from the country blacktop, and I've got two neighbors who tend to their business and stay outta mine. One brings me real chicken eggs about every two weeks and shoots his pistols over there once in a while.

My other neighbor is an old guy who was a WW2 Navy Frogman, and the quintessential colorful old coot who tells far more interesting stories than I've seen on the History Channel. I slide over and keep his yard mowed for him, and try to make sure he doesn't fall off the roof when he climbs up there...which is about once a month, on average. All in all, a pretty good trade. For just a little effort and attention, I've got a walkin', talkin' piece of history right across the driveway.
 
Find out what the laws and ordinances are for your State and town, and if you are clear,,, blast away with real firearms... I miss my private range and canoe.

I would literally at times open up the back window from the bedroom and shoot the canoe from upstairs.
