Man shoots himself at sporting goods store

Newark Star Ledger
March 27, 2006

A man practicing sharp shooting at the indoor range at Ray's Sporting Goods in North Plainfield accidentally shot himself in the leg this afternoon, officials said.

Scott Loglisci, 31, was putting his 9mm Beretta back in its hip holster when the gun fired at about 2 p.m., said police chief William Parenti. The bullet pierced Loglisci's upper right thigh and came out about a half-inch down his leg.

Loglisci, who is from Scotch Plains, is in stable condition at Overlook Hospital in Summit, Parenti said.

The store has a good safety record, Parenti said.

"I’m not aware of many accidents there at all," he said. "I can’t even think of the last one."

Parenti guessed that the shooter must caught his finger in the trigger or that the holster caught the trigger as he was putting it away.

"He must have done something wrong," Parenti said. "Certainly the only way a gun goes off is if the trigger is pulled."

The store sells sporting goods and hunting equipment, including guns. A store manager who only identified himself as Dave confirmed the shooting.

"We did have an accident this afternoon," he said.

maybe if he put the safety on and kept his finger away from the trigger when putting it in the holster it wouldn't of shot him in the leg. just a thought:banghead:

Exactly how does one go about practicing "sharp" shooting?

It's my understanding that you do the exact opposite of "dull" shooting.

Just like mcg-doc said - you gotta look sharp.

Actually, I think that drawing from a holster to shoot is banned at Ray's  I could be wrong though...

I thought sharp-shooting was more of a rifle thing...

Anyway, yeah, safeties are good. Unless you have a 92G(de-cocker only) like me...don't put it in the holster with your finger on the trigger anyway.

And some of us might have fun knockin' this guy,but I hope he's okay.I wonder if he was just a regular guy or trying to ninja it up?

I always knew those Berettas were evil. I'll have to dig a hole in the backyard and bury mine before it shoots me, if I can find the courage first.

Not quite sharp shooting but the pain must have been pretty sharp.

:uhoh: God speed for a quick recovery.

Y'all crack me up

The Dood was shooting in Joisey!
They aint allowed holler points!
Just the pointy (sharp) kind!
least he was following the law if not the rules.

i'm going to try to find the contact info for parenti

just to thank this guy (and the reporter too) for not making and retarded "gun went off by itself" comment.

i used to accept such comments too without really thinking about it - but then, i was 12 and never took apart a gun.

(btw, i suppose a round cooking off in the chamber -sort of- counts as "going off".)
