Just bought a new knife while I was in town at the trading post an old man run's there. Bought it about 2 hours ago. It's a large hunting knife, sort of Bowie but a little different. It's called a Magnum and is made by Boker out of Solingen Germany. It is sharp as a razor blade and has beautiful heft and balance to it. It's a real pretty knife and I had just bought some cigarettes and had him fill a 100 pound propane tank for me and he called my attention to the knife. Since I'm an old and pretty steady customer of his and he alway's give's me a nice little discount on my propane and tobacco products I felt obligated to at least look at it. He must have a hundred knives for sale in there but I never pay attention to them. As soon as I picked this one up it felt good. As soon as I hefted it and saw the name 'Solingen Germany' on the box I was hooked. I quickly ran this month's bills through my mind and decided to go for it. I know damn well I'll never use it for anything. I hardly ever get past one of my Old Hickory's or my Leatherman SuperTool. I hope it has good steel in it....

Many thanks HSO..It is number D the last one, except my handle is just a tiny tad darker....Sorry I mis-spelled Boker. I went back and corrected it sir....

I do care. Thank you for telling me. Hell, I won't ever use it anyway probably and the man gave me a break on the price. I have been on the computer here researching and they say the knife is built absolutely up to Boker standards, steel and all and that if the knife was assembled, sharpened and polished here in the USA it would cost a lot more. Now, that's what they say...I'm sitting here waiting. I have some more information coming in straight and direct from Germany. I imagine they're going to say the same thing from over there..I do know the straight razor I use is a Boker product and it sure is a good one. Hell, no telling what country it was made in either. I know that Schrade Super Sharp (hunting knife) is made in China and it's fully up to standards. I know a man here who carries one and he swear's by it. The fit and the polishing is even better looking than when it was made over here several years ago..I do prefer made in the USA or Germany though....

The Magnum line is Boker's China made product line. The way German law is written they can mark pieces Assembled in Germany from blades made in China as German so it is very difficult today to say what's made where.

When 440 "stainless" is all that's noted about the blade I default to assuming 440A for blade steel.

What did you end up paying the old gent for it?

HSO, I paid him $78.00 for it plus taxes. He had it marked for $111.49. He know's I spend enough money in there. The certificate (owner's manual I guess you could say) that was in the box say's that the steel is 440 HC. (high carbon).. Anyway I like it. I will post a picture of it and the paper when I get some double AA batteries for my camera in a few days..PS--While I was looking at it, well, since I was already looking, I looked at a couple of more sort of like mine, just different looking grips and the blades a little different.. I didn't see 440A but the other 2 were (according to the papers with them) stated 440C..That's all I know HSO....Hell, it might be 420HC. I have to take it back out and look again....It's definitely 440HC according to the paper (manual) that I got with it....One more thing here. I haven't heard from Germany yet. May never. I went all over that knife and all over the box and all over every word on the paper. I could not find 'China' or 'Taiwan' anywhere. I did find the names "Solingen Germany' in three different places on the paper. The ONLY name or number ANYWHERE on the knife itself (unless it's under the grips there somewhere) is simply MAGNUM. Absolutely no other letter or any number or dot or dash or anything visible to the human eye....

I'd like a nickle for everything I've bought (knives included) that I really don't need or will never use. Sometimes you just gotta have it. Nice knife.

Ahhh, I don't take it as you being inflamatory. I like the feel and the heft of the knife and I only gave him the $78.00 plus the taxes. Someone would have given him the $111.49 plus taxes if I hadn't bought it. That old man (hell, he's only 3 years older than me) is a good friend of mine and I don't mind him making a little money off the deal. He has sure been good to me. I know he charges high for his knives but that's up to him what he charges. He sure goes through a lot of them, I know that. According to the pictures HSO and you posted we are not talking about the same knife exactly. Mine look's a little different. The papers in the box state's 440HC. That may or may not be the truth but I don't really care. That man give's me a good discount on tobacco products, my propane, and my gasoline and I'vd saved more money with him and his wife than I spent on that knife. I owed it to him one could say. I'm still checking on the knife. I went to the link posted above and found one grade of steel, went to another link and found yet another grade of steel listed for it, plus I have the paper on mine and looked at a couple of more while I was in the store and between the three of them they were yet two more grades of steel. I won't ever use the knife for anything anyway. It'll stay right there in that drawer until I die or until Jesus come's back, whichever come's first. I still like it. It's pretty, sharp as a razor blade and has real good balance and heft to it....PS- But regardless of the price or the grade of steel it may really be, I know that it has Boker's name and Solingen Germany closely associated with it and is one of their products so I firmly believe it's a good knife; I don't care if it was actually made in Iran or Cuba. All of my guns were made in Italy and I love the hell out of them and they alway's work and work right, first time and every time....
