Well folks, I finally broke down and did it. I ordered a CMP M1... and it arrived today. So i'm in the process of field striping and thoroughly cleaning and thought i'd put a request out for the date of manufacture. What I have is a Springfield with a serial number of 455*** (6 digits). Oddly enough, on the right hand side of the stock, just above the rear swivel, is stamped "1935."
She's a nice one too. Wood has some dings but each piece matchs. Lots of original finish left too. I'll post pics soon if I can get my hands on a camera.
