New Machined Aluminum Paper Cartridge Formers

Wooden dowels work very well and they were my first tool. But i wanted a tight fitting cartridge that wont wear so thats why i use gauge pins to the exact size i need. Beats having to find or make a dowel thats exactly .360 or .363 for my pietta chambers. Although You can always size down a dowel. I like my paper cartidges to slide in smoothly with no air space between the chamber walls and the cartidge. This ensures no air gaps or paper thats crumbled up.

@whughett 3F burns more cleanly and leaves less fouling. The minimal bushing on the front of the cylinder in the Uberti replicas means that the fouling for the Schofield is more likely bind up more quickly with 2F. Lots of lube diminishes the risk. I run 3F, the 200 grs J/P Big Lube and an extra dollop of lube under bullet, over a card wad in my Schofields. Run a full match without them binding up.

The bullets are tumbled lubed with Alox before and after sizing.
Does the Alox interfere with the glue sticking the paper to the lead?

The fact that you haven't mentioned it doing so may well be the answer! :) But I wondered. I know some here have dipped their cartridges in lub after assembly, but I'm curious as to the effect of pre-lubing the projectiles.

Oops. Let me clear that up. Lubed Alox bullets are only used in metallic cartridges. Primarily with smokeless powders. Paper cartridge bullets or round balls are unlubed when assembling. Then, as I personally do , are dipped up to the paper in molten beeswax/Crisco or if left unlubed, lubed after loading with a few drops of Ballastol or a smear of what ever is on hand on the nose of the bullet. Others may have a different method.

Metallic cartridges loaded with black powder can have the bullet lubed using the pan lube method , the lube pressed in to a lube groove by hand,or as I mention in my previous post a lubed felt wad within the case or simply, as I borrowed from YouTuber cap and ball, a smear of lube over the chamber mouth after loading the chambers. This of course for self casted lead bullets. One can buy bullets prelubed for black powder also. I also have an RCBS bullet lube/sizer but grew tired of that routine.

When I first started paper cartridges in late 2019 I did the twisting paper tail thing, but didn’t like the erratic ignition.

Details are important...

Ok, that makes a lot of sense. I guess I got lost somewhere btw paper and metallic. Thanks for the clarification!

I've made a few twisted tail paper cartridges just to try my hand at the process; when (IF?!) time permits, I want to offer several posters here the most sincere form of flattery and imitate the heck outta their methods. :)

Someone on Etsy is also making caliber specific paper cartridge formers out of plastic. --->>> https://www.etsy.com/listing/891828...4?ref=landingpage_similar_listing_top-5&frs=1
They're being sold by: GunsOfTheWest
$65 for the whole set.

A single caliber is $20.--->>> https://www.etsy.com/listing/863997...r?ref=landingpage_similar_listing_bot-1&frs=1
And he offers the kits for $35.

3D Printed Plastic vs Sold Machined Aluminum.. There is a price and labor difference for sure. I'm biased. I like mine better.
