I have the hunter in 243 and 280ai. I like the 243 better actually. The kimbers are great if your planning on backpacking or hiking and I've been very pleased with them overall. But if you don't need super light weight I still prefer the win mdl 70.

Another make with Mauser action below 1500$ is the Montana rifle company model 1999. I'd like to check out the asr SS rifle in 25-06 one day.
ok good to know i dont walk much maybe 1/4 mile in or out. there was a 1999 on gb for under 1000 in 7x57

I'm not a big fan of either, but have had more problems getting Ruger 77s to shoot accurately than Winchesters. The pictures shown of the Winchesters above show some relatively undesirable stock grains. I don't like "slab-sawn" stocks. They tend to be weak through the pistol grip than the vertical grain "plain-sawn" versions. I don't like buying fairly expensive rifles that I can't inspect, unless the seller gives a return policy if the buyer doesn't like the gun, regardless of function.

I'm not in the market for a new rifle, having three nice, accurate Rem 700s and a Tikka T3Lite, but I like Sako, Tikka, the new Mauser M18 ($699), CZ, Winchester 70 (with vertical-grain, plane-sawn, stocks or synthetic).

I'd love to try the Mauser M18, after reading about them in Outdoor Life recently.

yes the m18 looks good for the money. lots of people were saying its not a real mauser. they forget mauser made may different gun before and after the 98. the cartridges they have are nice to id like to see a wood stock to. thanks for your suggestions.

I'd honestly be happy with either, owning a 77 MK II in 6.5x55. Any Mauser bolt gun is fine with me. Hell even the current old school Zastava M-70 are ok. I recently contacted Montana Rifle about an ASR or ACR with iron sights as an option, but they said "Sorry, that would have to be done as a third party option." Really? Thanks fer nuttin! Lol

that sucks with montana there i like the action they have but all are a mate blue. a $1500 rifle should not have a sprayed on finish. and the wood from win super grade or the kimber are better for less.

Well I guess I won’t consider Montana anything more than a mass produced production rifle anymore.
