New Pistol - Underrated and Obscure - but wow!

I finally picked up a Steyr M40. It is a DAO "Glock-Like" pistol in 40 S & W. This particular model has a manual safety, excellent trigger pull, and is built like a Mack Truck.

I am initially impressed with the high quality. When you have been around shooting a long time you can get a sense or feel for quality.

I will have to get used to Steyr's unique triangular sights. I have read others who say that after you get used to it, it is very easy to acquire targets with. We'll see.

I have never shot the S & W .40 cal before either and I believe I am going to become a big fan. My problem is, I like them all - .380, 9mm, .45, and now this - but I believe that this could become a favorite.

Maybe If I had to settle on one caliber, this could be the winner.

Well, I guess it is just the excitement of a new gun (used)!

You've been a little slow catching onto the fact that Steyr makes one of the best polymer pistols out there! Steyr's big problem has been their lousy American distributor(s). The pistol, itself, is a genuine keeper!

I'm particularly fond of my Steyr M9A1. It addresses all the things I don't like about its cousin.

Should you ever need it, customer service is OUTSTANDING! Depsite what you hear on the net, Steyr is alive and well and handling all service-related support in Georgia.

Congrat's on your purchase....Steyr isn't talked about much on these forums..You're right-on with a .40 caliber...Good shooting to you....

Now, I have to do some testing to decide if it is the gun or the ammo! Any thoughts?

I would experiment some more with your ammo supply.

I am going to respond to my own post in the hopes that some of you other responders get to read it again.

Took the Steyr out for a test run. With American Eagle FMJ it ran great. But, with Fiocchi JHP I had two FAILURES to fire. My opinion is that the primer strikes were too light. Now, I have to do some testing to decide if it is the gun or the ammo! Any thoughts?

I would call SAI (Steyr) and ask for Jeff. 770-888-4201. Very helpful. I had to send mine in for an extractor upgrade. Quick turnaround. Extraordinary service. He may be able to diagnose over the phone and confirm the ammo issue you mentioned. It'd be worth a phone call to find out.

Congrats on the new Steyr. I picked up an M9A1 not too long ago and it's been great. The sights do take a little getting used too.

I've got a Steyr M9 and S9. They're great. I've also got several Glocks and I'm convinced that Steyr could give Glock a run for their money if Steyr could ever get their US act together. I mean damn..............I've never seen so many false starts from a gun company since AMT and most of you will recognize that this is not a compliment.

I had the first generation M357. It would have a FTE about every 100-200rds. I think the extractor design is at just too steep and angle so that more force is exerted on the sides of the extractor as it slides against opposing surfaces. I'm also not a fan of the loaded chamber indicator.....something extra to keep the action forced open by additional spring tension.

Otherwise, it is one well made polymer pistol. Definately one of the best made.

I picked up a Steyr M9 several years ago, not too long after they came out. Already had a Glock, but what really attracted me to the Steyr were the ergonomic design, the manual safety, and the trap sights. I've been very happy with it, although I had to have a custom Kydex holster made for it; couldn't find anything else out there. Also high cap magazines, which were available a short while ago, seemed to have dried up. If anyone can point me in that direction, I'd be much obliged.

It would seem as if a European pistol would function best with European ammo, but sometimes this is not the case. I would try other brands of JHP ammo for functioning before condemning what sounds like a nice gun. Perhaps the Fiocchi primers are too hard for the gun's striker mechanism. If, however, you have this problem across a wider spectrum of ammo, then the gun would have a problem.

Cdnn seems to have some of the hi-caps, too bad they run about twice the price of the 10-bangers. Ive always thought the M9 was a pretty pistol, how is the trigger on these things?

Trigger is okay; a little more gritty and not as smooth as a Glock. Take-up is very minimal, not too heavy, just seems like a two stage before it breaks.

It has been my experience that fiocchi is probably not the highest quality of ammunition.
My brother has a box of 9mm overloads once that recoiled like .357's and split cases clear to the case head. It only took a few rounds to realize that something was seriously wrong (Thank God !).
Since the service is apparently pretty good, you could send it in but I would try different ammo first.
Even the P-225 I used to have, which was reliable with everything else that would fit in the mags, had issues with one type of ammo (Olympic I think).
