I'm torn between a Springfield XD or a 1911 style pistol. I only have $ for one. I've never shot an XD but have heard nothing but great things about them. On the other hand, I've shot 1911's and love them.

Which should I use? If you suggest the XD, would you suggest a 9, 40, or 45? If you suggest a 1911, which brand?

    Thanks

    Springer for 1911s.
    2nd choice: Rock Island.

Two excellent choices - XD or 1911. Can you shoot an XD?

Great choice Quack. I've got an STI Eagle and it's wickedly accurate, has an incredible trigger, and is smoother than a silk negligee on a Victoria Secret's model.

i have been wanting an Edge for a while. it's much better than my other 1911s including my TRP & EMP. I'm actually going to a gun show today to try & sell some other guns to fund a Nighthawk :)

i don't have anything against the XD, but i prefer my Glocks & 1911s over them.

I like my 1911s so that would be MY 1st choice. You're NOT going to go wrong with either but go with what you know and like-that means 1911.

I had an xd and loved it. I'd almost kill for a 1911 though.

    Two somewhat different beasties.

The 1911 will have a better trigger, more aftermarket options, and more class then an XD, but it will hold at most 8+1 rounds. It is also slightly more complex to break down and clean then an XD.

The XD will hold more ammo then the 1911, will be lighter then the 1911, the trigger will be "OK", its a breeze to break down and clean.

Size-wise an 1911 is thinner then an XD, making it easier to conceal.

Accuracy between the two, stock, should be comparable, unless of course we're talking about an $2000 accurized from the factory 1911 vs stock XD :p.

Personally, I would go for the XD because I do find the construction of the 1911 a little too strange for my liking (Barrel bushing AND a swing-link linkage to the barrel? What is this $#*%?!)

As for your caliber question, pick one; the 9mm and .45 both have over a hundred year's worth of history of putting people down quite effectively. The .40 is the new kid on the block, but seems to work fairly well too. With quality ammo, there's really no appreciable difference with any. With the 9mm in a standard XD you get 17+1 shots (advertised is 16+1, but I have had no issues with running 17 rounds in their 16 round mags), with the .45 you get 13+1. The .45 will have a larger grip then the 9mm/.40. Depending on your hand size, this may or may not be an issue. As a medical practitioner, I can tell you that the most deadly round out there is the .25acp, since we've seen more folks dead on the street from that then from a 9mm .40, or .45. Additionally, the terminal, actual flesh difference between the 9mm and the .45 is non-existent. Only way to identify what they've been shot with is to dig out the slugs and measure them.

Shoot both, pick which one you like.

If that’s the case you’re not ready for a 1911.

I gave my 1911 to my dad when I got my XD 45 compact. Easy to clean, accurate, and ultra reliable. I'll always love 1911s, but it's nice to have more bullets. They both shoot well and are great guns, but I like the XD more. Someday I'll get another 1911.

XD is a great gun, extremely reliable, and unlike 1911's, easy to disassemble and clean! Go XD.

    I recommend the

XD 45 or XDm 40 with night sights. I have XD45c with Tru Glo TFO's and XDM 40 with Trijicons. You will not go wrong with either. Great guns, reliable, accrate, and very durable.

    It depends on the use.

If for defense, the 1911 should be carried cocked and locked. This is NOT for the casual shooter, as it takes a serious commitment to the C&L system.

The XD can also be used for serious defense, so please don't misunderstand me.

If the gun is for general purposes, buy the XD, or a Para 1911 with the LDA trigger.

1911, I own an XDM9 and have shot an XD and a couple 1911s. I'm gonna pick up my Springer TRP next week. Would take the 1911 over all comers.

It depends on whether or not you want a striker fired pistol or a traditional, single-action autoloader. If you are more familiar with one over the other, go with your experience level. I never want to have to guess which gun I have in my hand this time.

I have an XD45 Tactical, and I absolutely love it...I carry it concealed on my body in the winter, and in my car in the summer. I bought a S&W 1911, and I haven't had a chance to shoot it yet, but I look forward to doing that in the next few weeks. Get some carry experience first, and get used to the recoil of a 45 with the XD, and buy a 1911 later imho...

1911, only if you're willing to train with it. Other wise go with the semi auto equivelant to the revolver, the XD. My wife carries an XD and it's a fine pistol. She doesn't dedicate as much time as I'd like to practise shooting, but at least she carries it and occasionally, when the weather is nice, she will accompany me out to the range to shoot. The only reason she went with that over a revolver was because the trigger wasn't so bad as those DA revolvers and she can indeed rack the slide rather easily and speedily. No safeties to mess with and very easy gun to deal with. I carry a 1911 because I care to respect the level of training it requires to handle one of them. I wouldn't carry any other type of handgun as my primary sidearm. (I have a Walther PPKs as a BUG)
