New PPK/S owner-- ammo/grips advice

Hello, new to the boards here. I have not owned a handgun for quit some time but decided about a month ago to get a CWP and buy something to carry. After doing a lot of homework and shopping around, I ended up getting a Glock 26, BUT for me it turned out not to be idea for carry... to damn heavy AND blocky. I ended up trading for a nearly new PPK/S with a friend.

Not to bad so far. Took it to the range yesterday and managed to get some 2-3 inch groups at 7-10 yards... not bad for shooting it for the first time. I Did have about 7 misfeeds and one stovepipe, but that may have been operater error or the uber cheap ammo. Also, the backstrap cut me up a little because of the sharp edge, but I can round that out. One thing I REALLY think would help me would be some rubber replacement grips with finger grooves. My hand was all over the place with the stock grips, AKA the backstrap slicing me up. Not sure if I will keep it or not. I will give it a month or two and see how it goes. There are plenty of fish in the pond to try, thats for sure :)

With that said, I am looking for some advice that may have been asked a 1000 times before.

First, what is the best ammo to use? Both FMJ and JHP. I know some PPK's can be picky, but I thougt I would ask anyway.

Second, I need good rubber grips... any suggestions? I thought hogue made some, but I will be damed if I can find them anyplace. I was thinking of a slip on grip, but not to sure about that.

Any and all advice would help... thanks!

These guns tend to run best with the hottest ammo you can find.
That being either +P domestic ammo or stuff imported from europe where they load this round hotter.

They have a longstanding rep for biting the hand that holds them but for some reason mine has never bitten me.

Best advice on ammo is to try a variety of high-quality defense ammo .

Remington, Winchester, and Federal make excellent hollow point ammo for the .380, and I'd try some of everything I could find until I found something that was reliable and accurate in your specific gun.

For rubber grips, my favorite was always the Pachmayr Signature model.
This is a wrap-around checkered rubber grip, with a separate checkered panel that fits over the back strap, and is held in place by the grips.

The key to the Walther is to shoot enough of the chosen ammo to be absolutely SURE the gun is reliable with it.
Accuracy takes a distant second place.
 
I agree PPK/s like hot ammo Corbon 90hp has always worked good in mine also Rem 102 GS work in mine. The Pac's are only rubber I know and these won't work on the S&W PPK/S. One thing I have found is my mags MUST be Walter banner mags nothing else works 100%in mine.You might want a GS to polish your feed ramp or do yourself by hand no Dremal tool.
Next mine likes to be well lubed not soaking wet and dripping but lubed. I carry mine more than any of my other firearms and has never given me any trouble.
I don't know what to tell you about slide bite as I've never experiance in on any pistol I've owned, Smallest being a Bauer 25, and I stand 6'3" and 320lb.
 
Again, use hot ammo.

A lower grip helps with the hammer/slide bite. Curl your pinky around and place it under the frame. (i.e. use only two fingers on the grip) Trying to put the pinky on the frame forces your hand upwards into the whirling Ginsu slide.
 
Just a couiple of suggestions.

Walmart bulk .380 , with the truncated nose, or other high quality round. Stone the grip screws (slot) over, if they stick out a little. Tighten up on your strong hand grip, blowback operation of pistol requires this for reliable operation. Had to go to placing weak hand palm up below strong hand, because of the sharp edges around grip and trigger.

While haven't done it yet, a dehorning would be first thing would alter on the pistol (trigger,trigger guard, slide and grip frame). Not so cheap on a blued model? If a stainless, look at rear of slide doing the cutting, edges might not to be so sharp?:uhoh:

Have 2 stainless PPK's (32 & 380), both shoot to POI at 25 yds. The 380 ain't an extended range time pleasure shooter (opinion)
