Remington Hevi-Shot Buckshot

Has anyone here tried this Buckshot yet?

I think I am going to pattern it for my HD Shotgun and have a three way comparison between:
Express 2 3/4" 9 pellet 00 buckshot
Nickel plated 2 3/4" 9 pellet 00 buckshot
Hevi-Shot 2 3/4" 9 pellet 00 buckshot

40% tighter groups sounds pretty good!

FWIW They also have some New 7/8 oz High Velocity Slugs.

If it works anything like Hevi for waterfowl the buckshot shooters are going to go nuts for this stuff. It ought to penetrate a deer completely broadside at buckshot ranges with OO pellets:what:

$2 a bang should go over a little easier with deer hunters too.

Since hevi-shot is like 20% heavier than lead, does this mean that each 00 pellet will weigh more than 54 grains?
 
Yes, but Buckshot will still suck compared to slugs.

What is needed is a Brenneke designed "Hevi Slug!"

Buckshot is MUCH superior to slugs within it's effective range (which varies depending on pattern, etc). Close range Buckshot will ALWAYS be king. Slugs suck compared to buckshot.
 
True. More wounds channels.

I think the Hevi - Shot is 10% heavier than lead not 20%.

Hmmm, I wonder is that means each 00 pellet weighs 60 grains instead of 54?

Problem is that range is always far shorter than you think.

40 yards is MAXIMUM Bucksot range at best.

Better to use slugs at all ranges.
 
60 yards with buck shot? you must have a barrel that is chocked very tight. How do you keep from deforming the buck shot? It would seem that deformed shot would not have a consistent pattern. You are not trying to pull an old mans leg woud you? :)

Buckshot bleeds velocity like crazy!

You might hit, but you will only wound.

Proof? Look at how much a .50 caliber lead ball looses and how FAST it loses that velocity.

000 buck is only .36 and will not do as well as that .50 caliber ball!
 
I dunno - I've killed deer with buck and slugs. Slugs work much better. In Jan I triple tapped a good sized hog with slugs and buck (#1). The buck didn't penetrate worth beans while the slugs did.

No more buck for me unless it's deer or smaller and only if required - like a dog drive.

HD finds buck in my shotguns.
 
First time I saw anything about Hevi Shot I figured it would make a lot of sense for a Home Defense load. It is harder and denser than lead, so for given shot size it gives tighter pattern and deeper penetration. It also retains velocity better (higher SD=higher BC with roundball).

I like OO buck but 9 pellets don't give good pattern density at any range once shot has spread out, based on my understanding of SG's pattern density is VERY important. IMHO the reason buckshot works well most of the time in real world is that it is probably used at much closer range than most people think (ie I'm guessing under 7yards most of the time just like handguns). When I shoot paper and only get two or three pellets in vitals it doesn't inspire much confidence (I would feel better about two or three hits of 38 special RNL). Gun loonies need to realize that most people using SG's for social purposes don't have Vang comps, so are probably lucky if they have a good pattern density at past 10 or so yards.

I think a low recoil or standard power load using heavy shot and No.4 buck would be excellent for HD. And that O or No.1 Buck in heavy shot could replace OO as standard for LE.

As another poster mentioned pellets lose velocity quickly. Your probably lucky if MV is better than 1100-1200 fps from shortbarreled SG, at 50 or 60 yards I would guess it has slowed down to 600-800 fps ar best. Think 22 CB energy levels per pellet.
 
Buck works well when it all hits the target, and when it can penetrate enough to reach the vitals.

The idea of heavier pellets intrigues me. Using say, #1 buck with its higher pellet count but having a pellet weight similar to 00 would constitute a significant improvement in performance.

Trouble is, buck will ALWAYS be a close range tool. At best, the tight patterns and heavier pellets may add 5 yards, at a semi educated and optimistic guess.
 
Hevi adds 20+ yards to #6 shot on birds, and that increases with pellet size. Patterns are going to be the key to killing at extended range with Hevi, keep the pattern dense enough and the ranges it will penetrate enough to kill would boggle the mind. #2 Hevi kills full winter plumed snows and darks at 100 laser ranged yards, kills them GYD, and less than 15% of the pellets are recovered in the birds. Think about that.........

Cops will not go to a lighter buck, and that is for one simple reason: car glass.
 
Looked at the web site for vangcomp barrels, going to order one of them for my Ruger 10/22. With one of them vangcomp barrels on my 22 I should be able to hunt bears with it out to 60 yards. :). I might even give up my old Rem. 308. Sense I won't be needing it anymore :).
 
Buckshot at long range

Ok I for one am not usually a shotgunner when it comes to hunting deer . I can tell you this . I was on a deer stand last year which has about a 200 yard shot . I usually hunt with my .300 magnum always but it had a problem and was at my gunsmiths shop . The only backup rifle I had was a SKS with a 4 power scope . It was raining and a buck stepped out in front of me at about 50 yards . With all the rain and humidity I couldn't even pick up the deer in the scope to get a shot . I was a bit upset about this so the next day I brought my late dads Remington 1100 and setup waiting on this deer to make the same move . A squirrel started barking just like it did the day before on my right and I figured it had to be the deer coming in to cross again . Suddenly to my surprise a buck stepped out further downrange . I didn't even think about having a shotgun . I just aimed and shot like I usually would with a rifle . The deer fell like a dropped sack of potatoes ! When I walked it out ( and this is no bull___ ) I had hit and killed the deer at 110 yards . The 1100 was full choke using 3" mag 000 Winchester buckshot . Only one buckshot hit the deer in the top of the head . When I approached him I was waiting for him to spring up and run but he didn't . When I got close enough to look I could barely see a little of his brains hanging out . Just in case I popped him two more times behind the ear with my .22 pistol . This is a true story !!! I'm not saying if another one came out that far again I could do the same . All I can say is the good Lord above guided that one buckshot . It sure didn't have anything to do with skill thats for sure . Take care all and God bless , Sumawolf
