I have a new rifle design idea and have tried to call some manufacturers and have e-mailed them but to no avail. I looked into obtaining a patent for my idea, but it is way too expensive.
This is a unique and genuine design that I have never seen before and believe it could provide significant improvements to what we have today.

Who can I talk to to get this ball rolling?

BTW, The whole thing popped into my mind one day, every aspect of its operation, I even went to a hardware store and made an mock-up of it with wooden dowels, sticks and pvc pipes.

Military or sporting? What are you trying to do? Are you looking for a manufacturer to buy the idea, or a shop to help you build a prototype, or investors to get you the capital to start your own manufacturing concern?

I believe it could have various applications to include military and/or sporting, I'd like to develop a working prototype and have it patented or even sell the idea to a manufacturer.
My primary objective is to build it to see how well it would work then offer it to the market however I could.

Get it patented first or your skrewed.

Little story is two brothers that were lawyers came into the paintball industrie. They started patenting stuff that had been around for decades. They killed so many good companys. soon they were paying royalties to them just to make the guns they had been making for years.

Watchout its a cut throat business out there.

You don't need a patent, you need a non-disclosure agreement.

Looking at new gun portfolios, if yo have something innovative, Kel-tec looks to be the door to knock on first.

Sounds like they should have gotten their own lawyers.

There is a reason for prior art.

Patents aren't as useful as people think. You have to defend them in court. If someone steals your patented idea, get ready to hire a lawyer and spend a lot of money in court. If the other guy has deeper pockets, you may well run out of money before you get a judgment.

There's a reason most patent trolls are lawyers.

The first place to start if you have an idea like this is the US patent and trademark office. http://www.uspto.gov/ There, you can search the patent database to see if anyone else had the idea patented first.

From that point, if you have an idea that is new, unique, and different enough from the prior art, you have a choice to make: 1) either get investors or take out a loan to get the idea patented, 2) keep it a secret until you have the ability to move forward, or 3) make sure you have proper nondisclosure, noncompetition documentation before you present this idea to any company - otherwise they will just take it. They might just take it anyway if they think you do not have the ability to take them to court.

Just remember, the patent has to come first if you go that route. You will most likely not be able to patent your product if you begin to sell it.
