Yes, she very happily accepted a rifle for our 12th anniversary...and no, this isn't a thread asking which one to get...I've already got the rifle, the scope, and the rings on the way to the house...her old Rem 700 270 just never did perform as it should, very accurate rifle...with a very slow barrel...and my buddy that i bought it from wanted to buy it back anyway (3rd time now, this rifle and I go back 20 years)...and I've been happily on the Winchester bandwagon for 3-4 years now...I no longer own any Remingtons at all...and I got my lady fixed up right...her rifle is nicer than mine, if you prefer wood over McMillan (and she does)....pics when I get home and get it all together, maybe sooner if she takes some when she gets it in a few days.

The rifle...Winchester/FN Featherweight Deluxe in 270 Winchester.

The scope...Ziess Conquest 3.5-10x44 with the Z-Plex reticle.

Rings...Talley.

I love Winnie M70s and have Zeiss Conquest 3.5-10x44s on both of mine (though with the RapidZ800 reticles). I have a Zeiss Conquest 3-9x40 with a Z-Plex on my Win M70 in 7x57...love the combination. Good choices and your bride will need to remember that "...it's not the arrows, Tonto!".

I mulled over that scope alot...really wanted more magnification (12x) but there just wasn't another one that fit the bill...under a pound, no 3rd knob (parallax), 44mm objective, and not bulky...

I'm figuring the clarity of the Ziess will make up for some of the lack of magnification...honestly, I'm a little jealous of the scope myself, lol.

EDIT: About the 12x thing...where we hunt the shots are almost always longish, at least 250-300, and can go to 800+...but she doesn't shoot past 400, and seeing small antlers at 400 yards just can't be done with a 9x, figured that out last year on the lil scrub buck pictured below...shot at a laser ranged 345 yards...when he stepped out, she said "its a doe"...I looked at him through my scope (16x) and said "no...I think its a lil buck"...took me a minute to be sure even at 16x, lol...she dropped him clean, right where he stood.

If we had bigger deer...this wouldn't be a problem, lol...but we just have lots of little ones, they taste just fine though.

No ethical shot on anything larger than a Chippermunky needs more than 9x or 10x with a .270 Win. I keep my scopes on their lowest power to ensure widest field of view and ease of target acquisition while stalking. I crank up the mag as needed to find my desired point of aim before the shot.

Now my three favorite stalking rifles are a Ruger No. 1 and two Ruger 77RSIs (20" and 18.5" bbls) in .308 and .270, on which I have both express sights and a 2.5-8x36 Leupold VX3 scopes with Duplex reticles. All three have more than enough magnification and the compact size and light weight make for good carrying.

Magnification, like home cooking and young girls, is over-rated.

Wait a minute...home cooking overrated???

I gotta disagree with you there, lol.

Magnification...even 6x would work for shooting deer at 400 yards, even 600...I usually leave mine on 6x for shooting...but seeing small antlers at distance is another thing entirely.
