New Ruger 10/22, two weeks later....

Bought a new Ruger 10/22 (std carbine) at the gun show. With the unusually low price of $179.00, it seemed like a sure bet. I've been wanting one to modify for sometime, considering the only other .22 rifle I have is my family heirloom Remington 513T.

I've seen some pretty cool 10/22's out there and had a good idea of what I wanted to do.... In only 2 weeks I'm about there.

Current mods.
Houge overmold stock in OD Green.
Shaw 416 stainless barrel .920 dia, 18" strait fluted, bentz chamber.
Target Sports M68 Aimpoint clone sight.

I've got a few more mods to do. The trigger needs some work but I haven't thought about if I should try and slick up the stock one, buy drop in parts, or spring for a big $$$ complete assemblies. The optical sight will get upgraded at some point. The CDNN Target Sports Amipoint clone is all plastic and was cheap. I bought it to check it out, and see how long it takes me to break it...

Range Report to follow. This weekend I'll take it to the range, zero the site, shoot it for accuracy and test for reliability using common bulk ammo.

Honestly I'm not really a 10/22 guy... most of them don't really appeal to me the way that some firearms seem to catch me. That being said I think you have a real nice looking rifle there, classy. I'm a bit jealous, it looks real nice man. Let us know how she shoots!
 
Looks good! I've got one very similar....which i idiotically lost a spring from the trigger group while cleaning a while back. Instead of buying just the spring, i sprung for a $40 whole trigger group from www.heddonpal.com like the drunken sailor i am. It is great. At first i was skeptical of the polymer instead of the metal housing, but it is lighter, tighter, and has some finger grooves on the trigger. Also, there's a lot less trigger wobble, and an extended mag release. Cheers!
 
...which actually now that i look at your picture again, might be the exact same trigger group that you've already got.
 
mad props to you for the hogue stock. i love both of mine. i didnt go for a red dot optic on my configurations, but i think you will have a little too much fun with that setup. good job!
 
I'm thinking about getting the Hogue overmolded stock for mine, anyone seen them for under $65?
 
I have the black OM stock on mine, along with a 20 in. Green Mountain barrel, and a volquartsen "action kit plus" which includes new hammer, sear, adjustable trigger, ex. mag release, and a bolt release. Its a different gun than the one I bought for all practical purposes, and shoots like one too! While the stock configuration has a rough, gritty action, a heavy trigger pull, and accuracy that left something to be desired, the current set up has a 3lb, crisp trigger with no crep or overtravel, an action far smoother than it came to me, and tends to shoots one-hole groups at 25 yards with almost anything I feed it (usually federal bulk from Wally-World). Sure, I put $200 bucks into a $200 gun...but I'm quite happy with my $400 10/22, far more than I was with the stock configuartion!
 
Nice job. Don't be afraid to use the oem parts and do your own trigger work. With just some stoning and polish work I have got several oem triggers down to the 8-10oz range. Adding a set screw to the sear is about the hardest part.
Don't be afraid to use the polymer trigger housing either. I have found that they have tighter production tolerances.
