Would the new Ruger Scout rifle be acceptable for Elk? The caliber is arguable (though generally accepted for Elk) I know. Does the shorter barrel have a serious enough impact on bullet velocity, ballistics, accuracy to really make it questionable? Anyone have any personal experience?

This is a pretty good article from a guy that ues 308 for long range hunting in Alaska. I am one that really likes the 308. I haven't used it hunting yet, have recently switched over from the 270. I like the 308 better than 270 but thats another thread.

But anyway, I have Remington 700 ADL Varmint in 308. I am going to cut the 26" barrel down to 20" to make it into a nice hunting rig. The rifle itself is incredibly accurate.

I haven't hunted with my GSR yet but I have carried it afield and put several hundred rounds downrange.

I much prefer the 5 round magazines for field carry.

A few of the loads I've worked up for the GSR - 150gr FMJ, 165gr Hornady Interlock, 170 grain and 115 grain cast Lyman bullets.

It even shoots buckshot very well. Good vermin/plinker load.

I have know doubt the 308 would perform well on Elk given the shooter does his part. I know a few guys that hunt Elk (and Bears) with 30-30's and they get the job done just fine.

The new Gunsite Scout is my Elk Rifle.

Sadly I didn't get drawn this year, so I will just be using it on deer.

A scout rifle is genraly a 20-22" barrel, synthetic stock, compact lightweight rifle used for high mobility hunting usualy in 308 or 7mm-08. For my scout setup I went against the grain a little with a 22" barrel T3 in 6.5x55. Featherweight (6lbs), compact, highly accurate, egronomic, perfect trigger, super smooth action, and kills everthing it hits in very short order. What more could you ever ask for. In big elk country I would probably use the same rifle in 30-06 pushing 200gr bullets, recoil would be a bit stout in a rifle that light, but not too bad.
Never shot a Ruger scout so I cannot vouch for them, but I do LOVE their Mauser actions. That is the one thing I would change about my T3 even though I have never had a brass fail to extract.
