If you just had to have that earlier 'Bloodwork' 627, a 2 5/8" barrel X8 with a non-fluted cylinder, you probably noted it's meteoric price increase over the years - as much as $2,500-$3,500 recently. Well, S&W has a 2010 offering - with the same SKU (170133), no less. In fact, only one simple way to differentiate between the two production runs - probably ten years apart. Yep - the current one has an IL! I don't care - <$1,200 list, I had to order one - it came into my pusher yesterday... and came home with me today.
Years of anticipation were somewhat thwarted when the grips were a bit gapped at the front. I put some Ahrends on - still a gap - shortened the roll pin at the bottom of the gripframe - emery boards are useful - gap gone. I tried the OEM boots - still a gap. A call to S&W Monday is in order - a kilobuck gun shouldn't leave S&W, much less their Performance Center Shop, like that. Speaking of the PC Shop - it came in a grey plastic 'PC Shop' box - thought it was a Ruger! No rubber grips or rug, either. A trio of X8 'clips, cable lock, spent case, and pair of IL keys, as well as the Owner's Manual, NRA discount coupon, and Club 1852 application completed the inclusions list.
I went across town with my wife - to feed one of her co-worker's cats - and just happened to have my bag with the new 627 in it as we came close to my club's range... it really wasn't a big detour. Three 'clips - 24 rounds into a log on the berm - glorified .38s in .357M cases - fun! It definitely had a trigger job/lockwork tweaking - evidenced by the Wolff 'Power Rib' hammer spring installed. My most expensive firearm purchase to date - broke a kilobuck with sales tax added - but I 'had' to have it - wanted it for too many years - now it's here - er, there - below - with my nearly two-year old 627 Pro - on my deck. Yep, it's really here!
I had to add this - current, 2009, actually, Owner's Manual - Excuse me, Safety & Instruction Manual - page 19 top line - WARNING: THE REVOLVER WILL FIRE IF THE TRIGGER IS PULLED!. Gotta wonder about that one.
