My front sight on my SR1911 Commander decided it didn't want to be my sight anymore so I'm shopping around.

I'm not a big fan of three dot so I'm looking at XS, Heinie, and Warren Tactical sights.

What do you think?

Heinie and warren both make great stuff. If you care about being able to rack the slide one handed look for a squared-profile rear sight rather than the sloped variety. I like the Straight-8 setup and I like square rear notches. YMMV

Note all 1911's don't have the same sight cut. I'm pretty sure the Ruger has a Novak dovetail. I'm not sure if Heinie makes one with the Novak cut (the one you have pictured isn't).

The trend in sights these days seems to be plain black rear sights with a dot of some kind or fiber optic rod in the front. Something to think about.

I'm leaning towards the Warren rear with the single dot in middle and something like the XS dot for the front.

I'm learning that the front sight on a commander is taller so I gotta make sure it'll work

If you're considering the XS dot and a different rear, height is not the only concern. The XS dot is much bigger than most and doesn't work properly with most rear sights. I don't have the answer, but you should do more research before heading down that path.

I really like the staight 8 sights. The only reason they are not on all my guns, is price.

The XS front sight is monstrous, I have one on a glock 34 and will probably change it out soon. It is fast on plates, but almost useless for prescision shooting. The sight will completely cover any sort of 10 ring, plus all the rings around it too. It will certainly cover groups I can shoot (which is not a testament to my skill, but the size of the sight). It would be fine on a dedicated carry gun, but a glock 34 is not that. It might work for you, but be aware of its limitations.

I also recommend staying away from using the XS front sight....as a matter of fact the whole XS sight set...besides being huge, the top of the sight is rounded

I had a smith build me a 1911 and he installed an XS (small dot) as the front sight paired with a custom rear. It was a nightmare to shoot with. I kept it as it came only because he had done such a nice job contouring the base to the top of the slide.

Of the choices presented, I'd choose the Warren...because it does allow racking the slide using the rear sight. Another you might consider is the 10-8 Performance sight set

XS standard dot if you want lots of precise range work, Big Dot on a pure carry gun, I can hit 12" plates at 50 yards with the Big Dot but you have to know your gun well and know where it hits, you will not shoot sub 2" groups with it unless you are a wizard

Speaking of wizards, mongoslow,is that a Frazetta work for your avatar? I like the Heinie, but the Warren looks good, too. Haven't shot one with them on yet. The XS Big Dot is better on snub guns.
