Oddly enough, a downwardly-plunging firey handbask
I am the webmaster for the Arkansas Rifle & Pistol Association, and have designed a new site that will be put up there in a week. I have asked for the members comments, and I would like yours as well. I have temporarily removed my site and put the ARPA one in its place. The address is here: http://comp.uark.edu/~dmgill

Please comment on it, as I hope to make it the best it can be.
Please also note that the new one is NOT posted at the site below, that is the address it will be posted at.

Thanks,

You could get some panoramic photographs of the range to use as background. Get some photos of the various competions to use as background in those areas (pics of a steel shoot for the IPSC/USPSA area for example). A map to the range is good, but a map to the range with photos of the range layout is better.

Good site, just 2 suggestions...

1) I don't like to have to scroll horizontal. I am set at 1600x1200 and am guessing it is worse at your suggested res. but I may be wrong

2) The text color on the bullets. I would go with something more contrasting

other than those two things I would say you have designed a pretty good site

Easy to get around in, pratical and to the point-I like that:D

The only problem I see with it is the bullets get lost in the background. Maybe change the bullet background to a black and white version, or a black and white negative version with the bullets in color. Also the background on the right does make the text a little had to read.

like it, but the backgrounds are too busy and distracting. distracts from naviagtion elements, especially in the left pane.

edit: btw, i'm an opera user, and it works great in opera. always like that.

Unfortunately, all I have is constructive criticism. I'm a web developer by trade, so I just seem to have an eye for the negative.

I would definitely lighten the background image up. It is way too distracting.

The "Friends of the NRA" page is all messed up. Looks like it was hacked with some sort of Microsoft HTML conversion.

The Contact page has a black background and blue HR. Doesn't match the main part of the site at all.

The script on the FAQ page is cool, but it'd be simpler if you just printed the questions and answers out longhand. The colors on this page are also black and blue and don't match the main site.

Also, the fact that the web page works on various browsers, or is best viewed with a particular browser, or meets HTML 4.01 transisitonal specs is cool, but isn't really important to me. I would shove this onto some less important page and not show it in the nav frame or the main frame.

You also might consider consolidating your copyright notice at the bottom to just say "Copyright (C) 2003 D. Michael Gill. All Rights Reserved" and make that link to a more informative copyright page. Then you don't have to repeat that information over and over.

Is there any way to shrink the main (spliced) logo on the home page? It is pretty big (30-40k) for such a small image.

Well, don't want to dwell too much on that stuff. The site does look good (I like the cartridges as the nav) and it looks like there is a lot of content. Good luck with it.

Thanks for the comments! Please keep them coming.

Unfortunately, I dont know how to make the bullets a different color. I cant use Cascading Style Sheets because the browsers I am writing for wont support it (I was told to write it for N5 and IE5).

The Friends of the NRA was designed for (and probably in) Nutscrape. It looks fine in it, but not in IE. Sadly, its out of my control.

Background: Odd thing is, I have lightened it up 5 times. 6th time is a charm...:D

I was actually going to make a non-javascript FAQ for it, but havent made time for it. This is more of a trial run before I actually post it.

I was quite concerned about w3c compliance, but after all their quirky things (like <center> isnt compliant:confused: ) and their desire for any webpage to be written in CSS, I am thinking of nixing it all together.

Thanks for the copyright info. I will give it a shot. Any hints for the copyright page?

How quickly did it load for everyone on dialup? I tried to keep the stuff small for dialup users.

The cartridges will be redesigned to be even. It was a venture in image creating before I knew how to get around photoshop. (it included Powerpoint in its making    )

Edited to add: oh, bullets as in cartridges. I thought bullets as in text bullets. I dont know if it I can change the Gifs, but I will look in to it.

Updates!

I have changed the menu to what I hope will be a more legible form, and have changed the layout slightly. I have yet to make any changes to the logo (only heard one opinion about nixing the AR-15 and making it a rifle and pistol, and would like more please!) I also plan to do something about the bottom copyright later.

Please let me know if it has improved for the better, and anything else you see that you would like included or improved.

Thanks,
Mike Gill, Webmaster

PS: the side to side scroll problem has been fixed.

The sites looks good :D . This may be picky, but you might try to put more space between the rounds. Here is a suggestion that would be cool. Make the rounds a rollover image so when you click on them they look like a spent round.
