New to me Remington Model 700 30-06 Question

I have a Remington Model 700 30-06 that I just picked up today. Its a beautiful rifle with the gloss wood stock, checkering, and black forearm piece. Its actually the nicest rifle that I have. It is a BDL and the guy I bought it from claimed that it is a custom deluxe. What does this mean? He claimed that it was unfired which looks about right. I was trying to find any info I could on it. I might resell or trade it to purchase an O/U 12 ga.

So basically what does the custom deluxe mean and how can I tell if it indeed is? Also, about what would it be worth if I decided to sell it? I was wondering how old it is and I couldn't quite figure it out from the Remington Society's site. Thanks all!

It's probably a little older, as you said it had a nice gloss finished stock. I seem to think maybe 80's or early 90's.

I wouldn't rush to sell it though, unless ya got it just to work the profit into a shotgun. It may turn out to be a good reliable shooter.

240SX: Its not the one you linked to. There is not any engraving on the rifle.

DRYHUMOR: I planned on trying to trade it towards a decent shotgun but I am thinking I might just keep it.

It looks like a very nice rifle and from what I have read about it it seems to be a great shooter. Hopefully it will get my first buck this season if its still around.

My bad, just try'n to help out. I've got a 700 Remington 30-06 and I love it! I just got it and I already have it sighted with bitch'n Leopold scope for deer season.

Yep, if it is one of the one's that's a bit older, it probably has a decent trigger pull.

240SX: That version seems like its a special edition so I wish it were that one.

realmswalker: It looks just like that except it doesn't have a scope and it has a front sight with the hood or ring around it. The bolt is also jeweled.

There is a 4 digit number engraved in the bolt that I didn't notice til I took the bolt out. Does anyone know if this was probably done by the previous owner?

All 3 of my bolties have the 4 numbers engraved. I believe this is done at the factory.

Good news! Thanks for the info on the engraved bolt. This is my first "boltie"..

Not sure if it has the heavy barrel as its locked up in a friends safe for the moment. It did not seem overly heavy to me. I have some pictures from when I first bought it but don't know how to upload them here. I don't have them hosted anywhere also.

The numbers on the bolt should be the last few digits of the serial number. This is to make sure the right bolt gets with the right gun during assembley.

I suspect you have a regular BDL grade Remington Model 700. The deluxe wording is Remington's for that model (BDL vs ADL). I don't believe the word "custom" has anything to do with it. IF there is no special engraving, I imagine it is simply the BDL version of the Model 700. Great rifle by the way. They came with a hooded front sight and Remington probably produced it just about every year in 30-06. The '06 is a money maker. I have one in 270 win.

What is pro/cons of long/short action. I was told this is a long action but I dont know how to tell.

Also, any ideas what her resale value would be?

30-06's only come in long action. Catridges of 308 size come in short action. I've got LOTTSA 700's in various models and they all shoot very well. You'll be very pleased I'm sure.

Only flaw I could find on her is a scratch on the stock:

Very nice rifle. THe 700 BDL has had the "custom deluxe" connotation for some time now. It is meaningless and people just call them BDL's. Yours is an older one which will have better polish and fit and finish than the newer ones. The older 700's can be noted by the brass pin in the stock near the trigger guard. The mid 90's is when Remington switched to a large black pin. The other tell tale sign is the older guns like yours are more narrow on the bolt handle right before the knob. It's a little hard to describe but it is very noticeable if you have one of each in front of you.

It's a great rifle and might be a good one to hang on to.

With that horrible scratch on the stock, you will probably want to sell that rifle. Just call me, all of my rifles have one flaw or another so it would feel right at home in my safe.

Your 700 BDL "Custom Deluxe" is still being produced and sells for a very reasonable $675 - $700. If you think that yours is an older model, the only way to put a year on it is with the serial number. Call Rem. and ask.
