I like to shoot 22 handguns. My main shooting buddy, my FiL, used to much prefer to shoot handguns at our local range at 15 yards. My couple of other shooting buddies vacillated between 7 and 15. I eventually got hold of a great S&W K22 Masterpiece and a very good Browning Buck Mark. They will both shoot better than I can at 15 yards, and shooting them occasionally at seven yards is amusing.

Lately all of my shooting buddies only want to shoot at the seven yard portion of the range. My K22 and Buck Mark are kind of silly to shoot at that distance regularly. So, and this is the sad part... I decided that I would have to buy another gun. Darn! :)

First I got a Phoenix HP22A for $84. It is the right type of pistol for that distance, but I've had quite a few misfires. I have a new firing pin and firing pin spring on the way, but the 800 different safeties that pistol has are also annoying.

Unfortunately for me, my friend at the LGS recently got a barely-used Ruger SR22 in trade, and suggested that in exchange for another handgun that I really didn't want anymore, he might be willing to work a deal...

So now I have a very nice SR22! It came with two mags, extra mag bases, the box, the paperwork, everything. Its fit and finish are very very nice. The DA trigger (doesn't matter to me) is not so great, but the SA is nice, the sights are nice, and it fits my hands well. I look forward to shooting it soon.

If any other member owns one, what is your opinion? Does it shoot well? Does it prefer or not prefer certain ammo? What holsters does it fit well in? Do you have any special techniques that help you shoot it better? Are there any extremely useful accessories for it that I might not have thought of?

Let me know. I am eager to learn! :)

I do not own one but have rented one a couple of times. I liked it very much. I will say that I didn’t care for the magazine but with practice I am sure it would be just fine for me. Loading the mag was a little weird.

I really enjoy the Ruger .22. Many brands of small .22lrs are ammo sensitive but the Ruger has proven very reliable with every brand and power level I've tried. I boosted the fun factor by adding a small green laser to the rail on my SR22. Well designed all around. Great easy to load mags. Huge fun to price ratio. Enjoy.

I bought one recently. It works well with the Federal bulk pak, Blazer and CCI Mini Mag ammo that I had on hand. Fun gun and economical to shoot. I like it.

Good score. I've never owned (or even shot) an SR22, but they're certainly on my list. Everything I've read tells me they're great little plinkers.

Good topic and a bump to keep it going.

The Lady and I went to a Gunshow last weekend with my intent to have her try handling small 9mm's for her to conceal carry. As you suspect with wife's thing did not work out as planned. At one of the tables she handled a Ruger LC9s and laying next to it was a Talo edition Ruger SR22. She picked it up and handled it commenting on well it fits her hand.

Well she is now the owner of Talo Ceracoat Elite Jungle Green SR22. We have not got to the range yet...hopefully later this afternoon with several different brands of ammo.

I have never had much interest in 22 handguns but this gun is really nice. If it proves to be as reliable as reports claim I can foresee a second one in the near future (along with a bunch of extra magazines).

I also need to know what my holster choices are.

Ruger has done a great job with the 22lr "carry around for plinking" market. The LCRx is also on my short list.

Ruger is apparently my favorite firearms manufacturer. I realized this morning that I own ten Ruger handguns, plus a 10/22.

I don't think the SR22 will beat out my SBH as my favorite Ruger, but it sure seems like a nice little pistol.

I have one. It has become my wife’s gun. It’s great to shoot. Should fit the bill perfectly for 7-10 yard distance. I only shoot Mini Mags through mine. Only hiccup was when the wife first starting shooting it and was limp wristing it. It’s a little small for me, although it still feels good in my hand.

I have one and I love it. The girls and wife shoot it and love it.. It's what I bring along to the range if I have a "new to handguns" guest. It has shot everything I have fed it. Very reliable and fun.
