New to Rifles, Need Help

Cheers all,

I recently won a Remington 700 SPS Stainless 30-06 at a sporting clays event and am really excited about it. I'm a lifelong shotgunner, but all my rifle experience consists of minor plinking with a Savage 22 and the occasional trigger pull on a Mauser 8mm.

My question to all the experts at THR is how should I accessorize it and how do I go about maximizing its accuracy?

Since I won it, I'm willing to spend $400 or so. But then again, budgets can be elastic. Also, I want to do this myself and make it a learning experience.

Two words

Good Glass. buy your self a good scope and a nice sling, and you will have a great combo.

Beyond what was stated above...I agree good glass is a must.

Trigger work, or floating the barrel would be my next guess.

I'd run a thread search on the 700. There should be TONS of info here on them.

If it were me, I'd get a good leather sling, a harris bi-pod and plunk a Leupold VX-III 3.5-10x 40mm on it and be done. That'd be right about $500.

I agree with the others about putting a good scope on your rifle. I would shoot it with different brands of ammo for accuracy before changing anything.

I'd spend all $400 on a scope. Nikon Monarch is in that price range. With a 30-06 I would go with nothing more than 3-9 or 4-12 power and nothing more than 40mm. You can spend the extra on quality rather than for that 50mm lens that really isn't gonna be needed for most situations....unless you plan on shooting 600 yards? I have a Leupold Rifleman but you might wanna test fit the scope because it didn't fit on my Remington 721 in 30-06 using the Leupold Rifleman rings.

I'd get rid of the factory lock. Brownells has kits.

Get a good scope first, shoot the crap out of it and see where you stand then. Glass bedding, free floating the barrel, bipod, sling may need to be in your future but try shooting it first.
