I'm at a point in my life where I can afford to spoil myself a bit. I'm thinking of upgrading my trap shooting gun. I handled a Franchi field model and don't care for it. Maybe the trap or sporting model would be more to my liking. I'm open to an O/U or Auto (least preferred).

Wondering what is out there new or secondary market that folks are really in to. SKB, Ruger or Franchi are in my budget, Perazzi etc not so much. I'm also open to a cheap gun with good shooting qualities.

Get yourself a real trapgun.
. They don't have to be expensive. They just have to fit your. It's not that hard to find a used one unless you're...well.....:scrutiny:... abnormally..abnormal?
O/u are best for catching your empties either for reloading or courtesy(suggested). They are also versatile for games and sporting clays and even a hunting trip.

Autos are worst for chucking hulls. But good for clays, and games....you probably already know this stuff.

If I were going back into the game and starting at 0......I would find a used bt100 browning with adj stock and concentrate on singles and hdcp. If I was really serious...a Ljutic.
Am I wrong @entropy ? ;)
I'm an ATA guy so....there's that .

A good place to start looking is by hanging out at the local trap club and looking at the notice board. Also for guys that just put a for sale tag on their shotgun while it's in the rack. Be best if they'll let you shoot a round through it before buying.

The key to any of them is the fit of the gun to you and your face. If you get the fit wrong, you'll regret it from the first shot when it feels like someone slugged you in the jaw. I prefer an O/U like Remington 3200 or Winchester 101 but my current and last trap gun is a Ljutic X73 (cheap monogun) that i bought off of the Cabelas gun library a few years ago. I've had Ljutic, Perazzi, Remington and Winchester, in single shot, O/U and pump. They all worked as long as I did my part.

The SKB Century III's MSRP is just under $1700, The 90TSS's MSRP is just over $2000. I have passed up two Perazzi TM-1's less than either of those, and older Ljutic Mono Guns and Dyna Kick models can be found for not much more than that $2000 SKB. As for doubles, I recently picked up a Browning Superposed 2 barrel set, cased, for just over $1200. Made in 1955, so no salt wood, :) 30" Full over Mod., and 26" Mod over IC.
It ain't the prettiest, someone cut it down to about 13" LOP, and someone later brought it back out to 14 1/2" or so with a black plastic spacer. But now I have an O/U I can shoot for doubles, SC, 5 stand, and pheasants. Superposed.jpg

Actual Ruger Trap guns (The single barrel model) are actually more that all the guns I've mentioned. The few I've seen for sale are @ $3000.

My Trap gun is close to 50 years old.
Beretta Mark II, 34" tubed, full choke, 12g.
Still locks up tight and shoots great.
I don't like the feel of the wide beaver tail on Browning's.
I did have to get a adjustable recoil pad fitted after having two disks replaced in my neck a couple years ago. Other than that I needed to replace the recoil pad as the original got hard.

I use a fitted Beretta 686 Onyx 12 G O/U I like it alot. Have a Franchi, nice gun can't hit with it. New model Browning A5. really nice but can't hit as well as with the 686 after tinkering with stock adjustments is better. Always have hit well with Remington's. My son uses a 11-87 with an adjustable butt plate and does really well with it. Don't be me. Buy so many shotguns that none fit quite right. The key is that the gun shoots where you look and you mount it consistently each time. Not the price. Going to a good fitter is worth it. so is trying different guns before you buy. Euro guns tend to shoot low for me.
I consider clay games as practice for hunting so I use field guns and my favorite game is sporting clays. Trap is specialized and many like specialized guns like many recommend here. Either approach is good. Enjoy.

I was looking for a sporting gun a while back but the used gun market is nuts. I saved up a little longer and bought a new browning cxs for a little more money. Looking back I’m glad I did that. For less cash the Weatherby don’t look bad, but I’ve never shot one. Another fun project I started for hunting and clays is a old silver spoon 870 that the reciever is getting cerakoted, a bill Davis stock added and I found a skeet barrel and a mod trap barrel for it. Don’t know why, just seemed like the thing to do.

Why is it what it seems like anyone can shoot a 870 ? They just seem to fit everybody. So why not a 870 TB or TC ? I have a model 31 that also fits.

I shot everything I could buy or borrow, but most of my Trap singles were shot with an 1100 TA.
Doubles with one or another OU; I still have my Broadway, wish I had kept my MT6.

hard to beat a browning for the money, i think i have seen only two that had a proplem in close to 50 years on the line. i have never had a problems with any of my browning shotguns(7), my bt-100 has close to 40,000 rounds thru it with only needing a good cleaning.

I can't speak with any authority in the matter, still a noob at trap but I do not hear good things about the ruger O/U's even though they look very nice. I shoot with guys that primarily use Krieghoff's and Perazzi's, they might have $20K-$50K to spend on a shotgun, I don't, but they have spoken very highly of SKB's and Browning 725 Citori's.

Browning has been mentioned quite a bit and I agree. They're well made, hold up well and won't break the bank. I would also agree with the folks that suggest an o/u. You can pretty much shoot any game out there with it. Do you want a 32" or 34" barrel? Internal or external chokes? adjustable comb on the stock? Lots to think about.

I shouldered a few over/unders this past weekend. Was looking to try a Browning CXS in 20ga but no luck finding one. I did try a few others and really liked the Beretta but for less than half the cost the Weatherby Orion might have fit me better. It’s interesting how they all fit a little different. I think you should go test a few out and report back

I picked up this lightly used CXS 20-ga 32" today on the way to practice. One of kids glommed onto it immediately. I got to shoot it a bit and was very impressed.
